The research focus of the Mind-Body Medicine Research Laboratory is primarily mind-body interventions for physical and emotional symptoms.

Current Research:
A clinical trial of mobile-app delivered hypnotherapy for hot flashes (remote)
A clinical trial of mobile-app delivered hypnotherapy for smoking cessation (remote) One of our current research studies, funded by the National Institutes of Health, explores the effectiveness of hypnotic relaxation therapy for improvement of sleep among menopausal women.

Additionally, other menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, anxiety, and depression are being reviewed for other potential benefits of the intervention. Investigation of the underlying psychological and physiological mechanisms are also within this area of study. Other studies have focused on pain management, smoking cessation, fatigue, sexual self-image, Parkinson's disease motor symptoms, and dissociative ability. As a part of this research program, a new scale for assessment of hypnotic ability, Elkins Hypnotizability Scale was created to help identify an individuals ability to respond to hypnotic suggestions. This information has proven useful in clinical psychology as it relates to developing individual treatment programs. Also, the development of the Psychological Distress Profile State assess constructs of distess which include depression, anxiety, anger, and hopelessness. This measure will provide a means of early diagnosis and may prove beneficial in the treatment of psychiatric and medical patient populations. Other areas of interest for research in the MBMRL is the use of a mindfulness-based hypnotherapy program for anxiety and stress and hypnotic relaxation theray in the treatment of patients with Parkinson's Disease.
