The lag time between when we start thinking or doing something different & that pattern becoming easier & more natural is no fun. We all wish trauma recovery patterns "took" immediately & intuitively.

Our nervous systems WILL change— but they will also b*tch about the process.

Growth can feel confusing because the part of us resisting change is not always trying to hold us back. Sometimes it learned, through experience, that staying familiar was the safest option. It remembers what hurt, what failed, what disappointed us, and it would rather keep us where we are than risk feeling any of it again.

That is why being ready does not always feel fearless. You can know it is time to move forward and still feel the pull to stay exactly where you are. The work is learning that fear can have a voice without being given the final decision.

A surprising amount of adulthood is learning to separate responsibility from ownership. Caring about someone does not make their happiness your responsibility. Being capable does not mean every problem belongs to you. Loving your family does not require becoming the person who absorbs every worry, fixes every conflict, remembers every detail, and keeps everyone else comfortable.

And sometimes what feels like growth is actually the moment you stop confusing being needed with being responsible for everything.

There is a different kind of strength in knowing what deserves your effort and what was only handed to you because you were willing to carry it.
