👁️ Don't Wait When It Comes to Your Vision

Some eye problems can't wait. If you experience sudden vision loss, flashes of light, a sudden increase in floaters, eye injuries, severe eye pain, or redness with vision changes, it's important to be seen by an eye doctor as soon as possible. Prompt evaluation can make a significant difference in protecting your sight, especially with conditions like a vitreous detachment or retinal tear, where early diagnosis and treatment are critical.

At Lakeview Optometrists, are highly experienced and skilled at diagnosing urgent eye conditions and providing treatment for many problems right in our office. This includes removing foreign objects from the eye and treating infections such as pink eye.

When specialized care is needed, we have strong relationships with vitreoretinal specialists and other ophthalmologists to help ensure timely referrals.

Remember, eye injuries and medical eye conditions are typically billed through your medical insurance not your vision plan.

With hazardous air quality affecting much of Minnesota, you may notice that it is causing eye irritation. There are a few things you can do to help alleviate the discomfort of itchy or "gritty" feeling eyes.

👁️ General eye irritation (stinging, burning, itching, excessive tearing, or a gritty feeling)
• Stay indoors as much as possible and keep windows closed.
• Avoid rubbing your eyes, which can make irritation worse.
• Use preservative-free artificial tears to help flush out irritants.
• A warm, moist washcloth or warm compress placed gently over closed eyes can also help soothe irritation and provide comfort.

💧 Dry eyes (redness, blurred vision, eye fatigue, or ongoing discomfort)
• Wildfire smoke can cause tears to evaporate more quickly and worsen dry eye symptoms.
• Use lubricating eye drops as needed.
• Apply a warm compress or moist heat eye mask for 5–10 minutes to help support the oil glands in your eyelids, improve tear quality, and relieve dry eye symptoms.
• Take breaks from screens and consider using a humidifier indoors if your home air is dry.

🔴 Pink eye (conjunctivitis) (redness and inflammation of the eye's surface)
• Smoke irritation can cause redness, but if you have significant discharge, pain, light sensitivity, or vision changes, contact your eye care provider to determine whether it's an infection or another condition.
• Wash your hands often and avoid touching your eyes.

If you wear contact lenses and your eyes become irritated, switch to glasses until your symptoms improve.

💙 Need a warm compress? Commercial moist heat eye masks are an easy, reusable option and are available in the Optical Shop at Lakeview Clinic in Waconia. They can be especially helpful for dry eye relief and may also provide soothing comfort for general eye irritation.

If you experience severe eye pain, sudden vision loss, or symptoms that don't improve, seek prompt medical attention. Lakeview Clinic optometrists can evaluate these types of emergent issues which are usually covered by medical insurance.

Eye health with a history lesson to boot!

A big thank you to everyone who joined us today for the very first Learn With Lakeview session at the Waconia Senior Center ! We were thrilled to kick off this new educational series with Lakeview Clinic optometrist Dr. Bradley Ludwig, who shared valuable information on protecting your vision, various ocular health issues, and the history behind some of today's common treatments.

Did you know today's cataract lens implants have their roots in World War II? British ophthalmologist Sir Harold Ridley noticed that when fighter pilots suffered eye injuries from shattered acrylic cockpit canopies, the plastic fragments often remained in the eye without causing inflammation. That observation inspired him to develop the first artificial intraocular lens, revolutionizing cataract surgery and restoring sight for millions of people.

Prior to this discovery, cataract surgery meant an invasive procedure in which the patients natural lens was removed with nothing taking its place. This resulted in long recovery times and patients having to wear very thick heavy, glasses to help them see.

We also explored the history behind the eye injections used today to treat wet macular degeneration. The medication bevacizumab (Avastin®) was originally developed to treat colon cancer because it blocks VEGF, a protein that stimulates the growth of abnormal blood vessels. Retinal specialists recognized that the same abnormal blood vessel growth causes vision loss in wet macular degeneration, leading physicians to successfully test the medication as an eye injection. That innovative thinking transformed care for countless patients and helped preserve the vision of millions worldwide.

Thank you to the wonderful team at the Waconia Senior Center for hosting this new community education series. The Senior Center offers a welcoming place for older adults to connect through educational programs, wellness activities, fitness classes, social events, games, and lifelong learning opportunities.

We are excited to partner with the Waconia Area Senior Center to offer "LEARN WITH LAKEVIEW" information sessions! Over the next 6 months, Lakeview physicians and medical providers will share information on various medical topics at the Waconia City Hall Council Chambers. These sessions are free and all are welcome! Registration is required and can be done so with the following link: https://www.waconiaseniorcenter.org/activities-programs

Dr. Bradley Ludwig will be the first to present in this series on July 2nd. He will talk about common ocular health issues such as Diabetic Retinopathy, Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, and more. Plenty of time will be dedicated to answering questions.
