During the Henning volleyball team's Park Region Conference matchup against Wadena-Deer Creek on Oct. 13, the players took part in a special "Dash for Cash" between games 3 and 4, raising over $600 to support breast cancer patients!

The donations will benefit our Henning Clinic and the Astera Health/CentraCare - Coborn Cancer Center, with funds specifically designated to support breast cancer patients. Amy Severson, FNP, from our Henning Clinic, was honored to accept the donations from the team.

A huge shoutout to Henning head coach Kristy Finck and JV coach Kayla Hoelscher for organizing this wonderful event, and thank you to everyone who donated!

🌟 Two Taylors, two Astera STARS! 🌟

Please join us in congratulating Taylor C. and Taylor K. from our Respiratory Therapy team, our September Star of Astera award recipients!

Both were recognized for their outstanding teamwork, ownership, and dedication to helping a patient navigate a time-sensitive situation with care and support.

The nomination:

"I would like to nominate Taylor C. and Taylor K. for their outstanding demonstration of teamwork, ownership, and commitment to patient-centered care.

I had been working with a patient for two days to assist her with obtaining everything she needs for pre-op clearance. The patient was extremely anxious about the possibility of having to reschedule her procedure, which was scheduled to take place in just three business days. Unfortunately, at the last minute, it was determined that she needed a stress test completed prior to her procedure. Her P*P promptly entered the order, and I called and spoke with Taylor C., who immediately recognized the urgency of the situation and worked quickly to get the patient scheduled for the very next day.

The following day, I had several interactions with Taylor K., who was conducting the stress test. Taylor K. took the time to listen to the full situation and understand the patient's concerns. She then went above and beyond to coordinate with the patient, the surgeon at an outside facility, an Astera provider, and myself. She kept me informed throughout the entire process and took ownership of the situation while the patient was right in front of her.

What stood out most was Taylor K.'s willingness to step in and coordinate care rather than simply completing her portion of the process and passing the situation along. Her actions helped prevent unnecessary delays, eliminated the need for me to spend additional time making multiple calls and potentially playing phone tag, and most importantly, helped ease an understandably anxious patient's concern. This was an AMAZING demonstration of teamwork and patient advocacy.

Both Taylor C. and Taylor K. showed what it means to take ownership, communicate effectively, and go above and beyond to ensure a patient receives the care they need. Their willingness to work together and proactively coordinate with everyone involved made a significant difference in both the patient's experience and our ability to keep her procedure on track."

Applications are now open for the Walter Goedel Foundation Grant!

Established in 2013, the foundation honors Walter H. Goedel’s generous spirit and commitment to giving back, with a special focus on youth and the Wadena community.

Funding may support educational programs, wellness-focused events, equipment, construction projects, and other efforts that benefit the Wadena area. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations and governmental organizations serving local residents.

The Astera Health Foundation administers the application process, while the Walter Goedel Foundation reviews applications and determines grant awards.

A gift that makes a difference! Today, we're celebrating Malinda, who recently donated breast milk to help babies in need!

Through our partnership with the Minnesota Milk Bank for Babies, mothers with extra breast milk can share this incredible gift with infants who need it most.
Malinda shared why she chose to donate and what this opportunity means to her:

"Donating milk has been on my heart for five years. When I had my oldest child, we needed to use donor milk due to him being born prematurely, and my milk wasn't in yet. Ever since then, I knew if I ever had an oversupply, I wanted to be able to donate milk and give back. It wasn't until my last baby that I was able to produce a huge oversupply. I'm so blessed to have been given this opportunity to help other families in need. Milk is such a simple thing, but it can make a big difference for a family. We are so grateful to those who donate milk to help others, and equally grateful for the kindness and generosity of those who have shared milk with us in the past. Whether we’re giving or receiving, it’s a reminder that we’re all in this together and that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference."

Working Together to Strengthen Trauma Care!

On Oct. 6, we proudly hosted CENTRAC's Trauma Threads, a free educational event bringing together first responders, EMS professionals, law enforcement, nurses, and regional health care partners.

Astera Health Emergency Department physician Dr. Rachel Redig led reviews of local critical trauma cases involving medical flight services. A panel of regional experts, including Astera Health EMS Manager Chad Olson and ED/ReadyCare Manager Kelsi Brockpahler, shared their knowledge to help improve trauma care when every second counts.

This marks our second year hosting Trauma Threads! We're proud of our team for helping lead these important conversations and strengthening emergency care across our region.

🩷 An evening of connection, courage, and community!

Our 5th Annual Pink Flannel and Fizz event brought women together at our main campus for an evening of breast cancer awareness, support, and inspiration!

Guests enjoyed delicious food and beverages while hearing from Dr. Shaneen Schmidt and a panel of cancer survivors who shared their personal journeys.

The evening also featured our "Supporting Her" bra drive, where attendees donated new and gently used bras to support women at local shelters.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended, our event sponsor, 1910 Sip House, and the Astera Health Foundation and Imaging Department for making this special evening possible!

We look forward to continuing this wonderful tradition next October! 🩷
