If you're wondering why I'm using broken pottery as my page symbol: it's an example of Kintsugi, which means "golden joinery" in Japanese. In this art form, pottery is intentionally broken, with precious metals used to rejoin the piece, making it more beautiful than before.
Similarly, I believe that the challenging and/or painful experiences of our life are opportunities for us to grow more fully and improve our experience of life. As the poet Rumi said:
"The Wound is the place where the Light enters you".
In the Ice Age, glaciers carved deep wounds into the earth, but these channels are where life giving waters could then collect in later years. Without these "wounds" the water would just wash off. We live in a world of duality, and we need contrast. We can't know light without the dark, and the lotus grows out of the muck...yet we have a choice, do we look at the lotus, or at the muck?
