💪 What is “Heavy Work” and Why Does It Help?

Did you know that activities like pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing, and squeezing can help children feel more calm, focused, and organized?

Occupational therapists often refer to these activities as “heavy work.” Heavy work provides input to the muscles and joints (proprioceptive input), which can help many children:
✨ Improve attention and focus
✨ Support self-regulation
✨ Feel calmer and more organized
✨ Build strength and coordination
✨ Make transitions a little easier

The best part? Many heavy work activities are already part of everyday life!

🏡 Try incorporating heavy work before:
• School or homework
• Mealtimes
• Community outings
• Bedtime
• Transitions between activities

Some easy ideas to try at home:
🧺 Push a laundry basket
🛒 Carry groceries
🐻 Bear crawls or crab walks
🪢 Tug-of-war
🧸 Squeeze play dough
🛝 Climb at the playground

Every child is unique, so pay attention to which activities help your child feel their best. Keep it fun, playful, and part of your daily routine!

So grateful for this incredible team and the families who support them every day✨ We stepped out of the clinic and onto a sunset dinner cruise to celebrate the people who make our work so meaningful. Between the laughter, beautiful whales dancing in the ocean, and quality time together, it was a perfect reminder of how thankful we are for this team and the community behind them💕
