I would envision myself caring for my community while I was in school, and I only saw myself doing it on my own. Completing 2 healthcare programs on the mainland oftentimes felt sterile, stripped of human connection to ensure professionalism. Growing up in Hawai’i, it was important to show affection and daily interactions with strangers always had a warmth to it. I knew I wanted to weave that feeling into my practice and I didn’t want to have to fit a mold, working at someone else’s practice.
I recently learned from reading a newsletter written by Kainoa Horcajo that theres a term for this intention. Ho’oheno: to cherish, love, caress, praise, and treat with affection. He explains that this is love that is demonstrated rather than just possessed, and that it should absolutely play a role in professional settings. I think ESPECIALLY in healthcare.
As a patient, sharing my health history can feel deeply vulnerable and calls for Ho’oheno. As your provider, this plays a huge role in how I treat. It’s also something that is demonstrated in my space, and I think thats what makes Livaloha different. I am constantly tinkering with the environment in here to welcome you as best as I can.
