Green flags to look for in a dietitian to know theyâre a damn good RD and theyâre changing the narrative of what nutrition is:
â
We donât have âcheat foods.â We can enjoy and treat ourselves without that mindset. Do you like cheating on yourself? Do you cheat on your taxes? Spouse? Hopefully not, so no need to do this to yourself.
â
We donât put you on âdiets.â Because what happens when youâre done? What then? After all, the definition of diet is the food you eat. We may use different tools and approaches but not a âdiet mindset.â
â
We donât tell people the Mediterranean diet is the best diet. First off, many people donât live nor are from the Mediterranean so itâs not always relevant. Can the foods in this area be beneficial, perhaps, but thatâs based on the person, their needs, access and financial situation.
â
We donât tell you your culturally relevant foods are unhealthy and that you need to cut it out. If someone told me to stop eating rice, Iâd just walk out âđž . Instead, we educate, inform and work with you. Foods can be inclusive. A damn good dietitian helps you find that balance.
â
We donât tell you to eat only organic and âclean.â Bruh â do you not see food prices? Especially on an island with insane prices? đ If youâre âprivilegedâenough to afford mostly organic and âclean,â share the wealth with others. Most people are lucky if they can eat maybe 2 meals a day. But a damn good dietitian will guide you.
Now, this is where the nuance of nutrition comes into play and why itâs so individualized:
-Some people may need a bit more limitation with their food choices depending on their specific health challenges and complications.
-We may used different tools and approaches to improve your overall health but the goal is the same; help you focus on realistic goals, work with where youâre at, guide you and get you to an optimal state of health.
-Social determinants of health such as homelessness, location, food deserts, knowledge, socioeconomics, mental health status, access to healthcare services etc significantly impact people from optimizing their nutritional status however, a damn good dietitian wonât let that get in their way.
