๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ September 11, 2001 โ€” We Remember.

Twenty-five years ago, our nation experienced a day that changed countless lives forever.

Today, we remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives, the families and loved ones who carried that loss forward, and the first responders who ran toward danger when others were trying to escape it.

We also honor the generation of service members who answered the call in the years that followedโ€”many of whom would spend years deploying, serving, sacrificing, and carrying the effects of those experiences home with them.

Whether you remember exactly where you were that morning or learned about September 11 through the stories of others, its impact continues to be felt across generations.

Today, we simply pause to remember.
The lives lost.
The families changed forever.
The courage shown.
The sacrifices that followed.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ September 11, 2001. Never forgotten.

This Labor Day, I want to recognize something that often gets overlooked:
A veteran can be incredibly hardworking and still be struggling.
You can show up every day.
You can get promoted.
You can be the person everyone depends on.
And still be dealing with PTSD, anxiety, depression, irritability, poor concentration, sleep deprivation, or difficulty handling stress at work.
Sometimes the evidence that a condition has worsened isnโ€™t that a veteran stopped working.
Itโ€™s the write-ups.
The arguments with coworkers.
The missed days.
The closed office door.
The promotion they turned down because they couldnโ€™t handle more people.
The job they quit before they could be fired.
Or simply how much it takes out of them to make it through another workday.
โ€œStill employedโ€ does not always mean โ€œnot impaired.โ€
So on Labor Day, while we celebrate work and the people who do it, I think itโ€™s worth remembering the veterans who are carrying far more into the workplace than anyone around them realizes.
I wrote more about what occupational impairment can actually look like in a veteran with PTSD here:

Anger and irritability are rating criteria, not character flaws. How worsening irritability and impaired impulse control map onto the 50% and 70% levels.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿช‚ National Airborne Day
Today, we honor the courage, discipline, and sacrifice of the men and women who have served in Americaโ€™s Airborne forces.
For some veterans, the impact of Airborne service continues long after the final jump. Parachute malfunctions, hard landings, aircraft emergencies, and witnessing a fellow paratrooper suffer a serious injury can leave lasting psychological woundsโ€”including PTSD.

At Brightview Psychiatry Solutions, we work with veterans whose military experiences have affected their mental health long after service.

In recognition of National Airborne Day, Iโ€™m sharing a resource specifically for Airborne and paratrooper veterans regarding PTSD, VA claims, and the role of psychiatric nexus letters:

To every veteran who earned their wings: thank you for your service and sacrifice.

Today, August 7, we recognize Purple Heart Day and honor the brave men and women who were wounded or killed in service to our country.

For many veterans, the effects of combat injuries extend far beyond the original wound. Chronic pain, traumatic brain injury, headaches, PTSD, depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbance can continue for years and profoundly affect daily life.

At Brightview Psychiatry Solutions, we are honored to work with veterans and to help document the mental health effects of service-connected conditions with the care and seriousness they deserve.

To all Purple Heart recipients and their families: thank you for your courage, sacrifice, and service. ๐Ÿ’œ

As we celebrate the 4th of July, I am also thinking about the veterans for whom fireworks can be a PTSD trigger.

For many veterans living with PTSD, the loud booms, sudden flashes, crowds, and unpredictability of fireworks can trigger anxiety, panic, hypervigilance, irritability, or the urge to isolate.

I wrote this blog today for veterans who may be struggling and need practical, easy strategies to get through the day with more control and support.

You are not โ€œoverreacting.โ€ Your nervous system is responding to what it has learned to survive.

Please share this with a veteran who may need it today.

Today is National PTSD Screening Day.

If you are a veteran who has experienced trauma and youโ€™ve wondered whether what you are feeling could be PTSD, today is a good reminder to pause and check in with yourself.

PTSD can show up in ways that are not always obvious, including:
โ€ข Nightmares or intrusive memories
โ€ข Avoiding people, places, or conversations that bring up the trauma
โ€ข Feeling constantly on guard, watchful, or easily startled
โ€ข Emotional numbness or feeling detached from others
โ€ข Guilt, shame, anger, depression, anxiety, or sleep problems

The VA offers a free PTSD self-screen that asks 5 questions about how you have felt over the past month. It is not a diagnosis, but it can be a helpful first step in deciding whether to speak with a mental health professional.

You can take the VA PTSD self-screen here:
www.ptsd.va.gov/screen

For veterans, PTSD is also one of the most commonly misunderstood and under-documented conditions in VA disability claims. Many veterans know they are struggling, but they may not have the medical language, documentation, or clear nexus explanation needed to support their claim.

As a psychiatrist and former VA C&P examiner, I help veterans better understand the role of psychiatric evidence in PTSD claims, nexus letters, independent medical opinions, and VA disability evaluations.

Learn more here:
https://ptsdnc.com/ptsd-%26-mst

You do not have to minimize what happened to you. You do not have to keep carrying it alone. Screening is not the end of the process, but it can be the beginning of finally getting clarity, support, and the documentation you deserve.

As Memorial Day approaches, we pause to remember the true meaning of this solemn day.

Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day began after the Civil War as a time to honor fallen service members by decorating their graves with flowers. Over time, it became a national day of remembrance for all those who gave their lives in service to our country.

While many of us will spend this weekend with family, friends, and loved ones, we ask that everyone take a moment to reflect on the men and women who never made it home. Their sacrifice is the reason we are able to enjoy the freedoms we hold dear.

At PTSDNC.com, we honor the fallen, we support those who served beside them, and we remember the families who continue to carry the weight of their loss.

This Memorial Day, may we never forget the true cost of freedom.

God bless our fallen heroes, their families, and the United States of America. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ
