🚧 Let's Talk About the Avoidance Cycle 🚧

Avoidance is something we're all guilty of at some point. We avoid difficult conversations, uncomfortable feelings, asking for help, or dealing with things we know need our attention. The problem is that avoidance may make us feel better in the moment, but it rarely makes the problem go away.

So how do we interrupt the cycle? Start by naming what you're feeling, talking with someone you trust, journaling, or taking one small step toward the thing you've been avoiding. Progress doesn't require giant leaps—just small, intentional steps.

The reality is we can only avoid things for so long before they eventually come to the surface.

One time I stubbed my toe and you would have thought the whole world was crashing down. 😂 Was it really about my toe? Absolutely not. I had been holding so much in that the stubbed toe was simply the tip of the iceberg. Something small triggered a much bigger reaction.

That's often how avoidance works. When we keep pushing things down, they don't disappear—they build up until something seemingly minor causes us to lose it.

Let's prevent the "stubbed toe meltdown" moments by checking in with ourselves, processing our emotions, and addressing things before they pile up. ❤️

✨ What Does a First Session at Present Hope Counseling Look Like? ✨

First off... it's probably not like the movies. 😉

No lying on a couch while someone silently takes notes.

Instead, you'll walk into an office that reflects a little bit of each counselor's personality, with the goal of creating a space that feels welcoming, safe, and comfortable.

A first session is really about getting to know one another.

Let's be honest—if we can't build trust, counseling is unlikely to lead to meaningful progress. That's why building a strong therapeutic relationship is one of our biggest priorities from day one.

We'll spend some time talking about confidentiality, your privacy, and what you can expect from counseling. We also discuss the few limitations to confidentiality and our responsibilities as mandated reporters. We do our best to explain this in a way that feels helpful and reassuring, so you know your privacy is important to us and something we work hard to protect.

We'll also talk about what brought you to counseling and what you're hoping to gain from the experience. Together, we'll begin exploring how we can walk alongside you in your journey toward healing, growth, and change.

And if you're nervous about your first session?

That's completely normal.

Many people feel anxious or uncertain before their first appointment. We get it. Taking the first step can be one of the hardest parts.

Our hope is that counseling feels less intimidating than you imagined and more like a conversation with someone who is there to support you.

❤️ We're honored to be part of your journey and look forward to meeting you where you are.

Did you know that TWO of our counselors specialize in working with first responders?

Meet Katherine Arnold and Jonathan Medine!

Every day, first responders show up for others during some of life's most difficult moments. But who supports the people who are always supporting everyone else?

Let's be honest—reaching out for counseling can be hard. Reaching out as a first responder or law enforcement professional can feel even harder.

Many first responders worry about confidentiality, stigma, career implications, or being misunderstood by someone who doesn't truly understand the demands of the job.

At Present Hope Counseling, our counselors work hard to create a safe space where you can talk openly about the realities of your work. We understand the importance of confidentiality and take a thoughtful approach to treatment, focusing on your needs rather than rushing to labels or diagnoses that may create additional concerns.

The goal isn't to "fix" you.

The goal is to walk alongside you as you navigate the trauma, stress, and challenges that come with serving others. That includes not only what happens on the job, but also the impact it can have on your relationships, family life, and overall well-being.

If you've been hesitant to reach out because of fear, uncertainty, or concerns about what counseling might mean for your career, please know this:

You don't have to carry it alone.

There is support for you, too. ❤️

One thing I see often is parents prioritizing their child's mental health while putting their own on the back burner.

First, that says so much about how much you love your child. ❤️

You are willing to put their needs before your own to make sure they are supported and cared for.

But I often hear:
• "I'll get to it later."
• "Maybe someday."
• "Right now, my child needs it more."

The truth is... you matter too.

I know counseling for the entire family isn't always possible. But I want to challenge you to do *one thing* this week that supports your own mental health.

Maybe it's:
✨ Going for a walk
✨ Calling a friend
✨ Reading a book
✨ Scheduling your own counseling session
✨ Taking 15 minutes for yourself without guilt

Remember, our children often feed off our emotions. We help regulate them until they develop the skills to regulate themselves.

When we take care of ourselves, we're better able to take care of them.

So here's your reminder today:

Your child's mental health is important. And so is yours. ❤️

At the heart of Present Hope Counseling is people.

We are truly honored every time someone reaches out, schedules an appointment, or trusts us with their story. Being trusted by our community is not something we take lightly.

Our goal is simple: we want every person who walks through our doors or connects with us virtually to feel heard, seen, and validated.

Because the truth is, life can be hard.

Whether you're navigating childhood trauma, relationship challenges, anxiety, grief, witnessing a traumatic event, parenting struggles, or a child's emotional and behavioral challenges, you don't have to carry it alone.

We believe healing begins when people feel safe enough to share their story and supported enough to begin writing a new chapter.

Thank you for allowing us to be part of your journey. It is a privilege to walk alongside you through life's challenges and celebrate your victories along the way.

❤️ Present Hope Counseling

Because even in life's hardest moments, there is hope in the present.

Hi everyone! My name is Kaleigh, and I am a therapist with Present Hope Counseling.

I specialize in working with adolescents who are experiencing trauma, anxiety, and emotional challenges, while also supporting parents as they navigate these difficult seasons. I am trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and am passionate about helping families heal and grow together.

On a personal note, I recently welcomed my beautiful daughter into the world. Our family spent 11 weeks in the NICU, a journey that gave me a deeper understanding of the unique challenges parents face during pregnancy, postpartum, and NICU experiences. Because of this, I am especially passionate about supporting families who have walked a similar path.

I am currently opening a very limited number of spots on my caseload. Sessions will be offered via telehealth through August, with plans to return to both in-person and telehealth services after that.

If you think I may be a good fit for you, your child, or your family, I'd love to connect. I have a private pay rate of $125 and am working on getting credentialed with BCBS and Aetna. You can reach me at [email protected]
