Children use play to make sense of their world. Through play, they express emotions, explore experiences, and communicate what words sometimes cannot.

As we grow older, our need for play doesn't disappear—it simply changes form. We find it in hobbies, creativity, movement, music, and the activities that help us feel present and connected.

Maybe play isn't something we outgrow. Maybe it's something we need to make room for.

Between ages 7–11, children begin making a major shift in how they think about the world.

They start moving beyond what they can immediately see and experience, developing stronger logic, problem-solving skills, perspective-taking, and an understanding that situations—and feelings—can change over time.

This stage of development, known as the Concrete Operational Stage, helps children understand concepts like fairness, friendship, consequences, and repairing mistakes. While they may seem more independent, they still need support learning how to navigate big emotions, social challenges, and growing responsibilities. Understanding how your child's brain is developing can help you respond with more patience, connection, and confidence as a parent.

At Little Dove, we help children and families build emotional awareness, communication skills, and stronger relationships through developmentally informed therapy.

Curious about how your child's development impacts their behavior and emotions? We're here to help.

Summer can bring more freedom, but it can also bring more stress and pressure for parents to constantly keep kids entertained.

The good news? Children don’t need a perfectly planned summer to feel connected. Often, the smallest moments become the most meaningful.

This season, try focusing on intentional connection over constant activity. A short walk, shared snack, bedtime conversation, or silly game can help strengthen emotional security and deepen your relationship with your child.

At Little Dove Therapy, we support children, teens, and parents in building stronger emotional connection, communication, and confidence within the family system. If your family could use additional support this summer, we’d love to help.

Healing doesn’t always happen through words alone. 💛

At Little Dove, our Expressive Arts Therapy approach uses creativity, play, movement, art, music, and imagination to help children, teens, and adults process emotions and life experiences in meaningful ways. Through creating, clients can build emotional regulation, confidence, self-expression, and connection — all in a supportive therapeutic space.

Sometimes the path to healing starts with a paintbrush, a story, a song, or simply the freedom to create. Call or view our website to schedule a consultation with us!

Discovery plays a crucial role in a child's learning journey, serving as a cornerstone of their development and growth. When children are given the freedom to explore their surroundings and learn independently, it not only enhances their confidence but also fosters a sense of self-autonomy that is vital for their future endeavors. This process of exploration allows them to make sense of the world around them, encouraging curiosity and a love for learning that can last a lifetime.

However, it is important to remember that this newfound independence does not diminish the vital role you play as a parent. Your presence is indispensable in providing a safe and supportive environment—a sanctuary where your children can always return. By offering guidance, reassurance, and unconditional love, you help to create a balanced foundation for their explorations, ensuring they feel secure in their journey of discovery.

Your emotions are real, but they are not who you are. You are the sky — steady, whole, and expansive. Some days may bring rain clouds, strong winds, or storms, but those moments do not define you. They move through, the sky remains.

Parenting can bring exhaustion, thoughts of “Am I doing this right?”, frustration, and various other struggles. In the middle of those stormy moments, it can be hard to separate what you’re feeling from you who are as a parent. But your hard days are not your identity.

Little Dove can create a space to slow down, process those emotions, and find ways to support these moments. When parents feel more supported and connected to themsevles, they’re able to feel more connected and present with their child too. You don’t have to weather this storm alone.

The Preoperational Stage is one of the most magical and misunderstood periods of childhood. Between ages 2 and 7, children begin thinking in symbols—words, images, and make-believe—but logical thinking hasn't developed yet.

This stage in Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development has two substages. Rather than being two completely separate phases, they blend into each other as your child's thinking gradually becomes more flexible and outward-facing.

Swipe through for a breakdown of both substages plus the four big concepts every parent should know: egocentrism, animism, centration, and lack of reversibility.

At Little Dove Counseling, we work with you and your child in making sense of these big concepts and strive towards strengthening your connection. To learn more or schedule a consultation, click the link in bio or visit www.littledovecounseling.com

A lot of parents are carrying more than they let on. It can show up as irritability, second-guessing your decisions, feeling disconnected from your child, or just a constant sense of pressure to “get it right.” Sometimes it’s not even clear what’s wrong—just that something feels harder than it should.

Parent therapy offers a space to sort through these things to understand what's underneath the stress, strengthen your relationship with your child, and find ways of responding that feel more aligned and sustainable.

At Little Dove Counseling, we work with parents navigating everything from big emotions and behavioral challenges to the quieter experiences—like loss of self, resentment, or burn out.

This work isn’t about becoming a “perfect” parent. It’s about feeling more grounded, more connected, and more like yourself in the role you’re in. If something has been feeling off or heavy lately, it might be worth having a space that’s just for you.
