When I teach about reversing dementia, one of the things I mention is what I call I-Cubed.

Infection -- Inflammation -- Immune

All three of these are factors that need to be addressed, and infection can cause inflammation and lead to immune dysfunction.

I think too many clinicians are missing the role of infections as a trigger for Dementia.

This post is so incredible – I want to know more about phytoncides, but it makes intuitive sense to me.

I have many different types of mature trees on my hillside, and they do have different types of energies and personalities.

They all make me feel very happy.

And my trees all feel like blessings. It's been a joy watching them grow over the 33 years I've lived here.

Communing with trees is such an easy and enjoyable way to practice mindfulness and enhance your HRV.

Dementia is often thought of as terminal, but results from a new clinical trial indicate that it might be possible to reverse it.

It's been known for quite a while that general anesthesia with inhaled anesthetic agents can precipitate cognitive decline with aging.

Unfortunately, too many surgeons and even anesthesiologists still don't seem to know this.

I have an MD colleague in her 70s who saw a well-regarded academic orthopedist. He told her he always uses general anesthesia, and told her her fears were unfounded! (She got a new surgeon.)

I counsel my patients to make sure they meet with Anesthesia ahead of time, and express their preference to have IV anesthesia and avoid inhaled anesthetic agents if at all possible.

I have seen surgical anesthesia as a precipitating/contributing factor for too many patients presenting with cognitive decline.

TAKEAWAY of the study below:

15% of patients experienced severe cognitive decline

59% had slight decline

26% had stable cognition.

Delirium occurred in 24% of the cohort.

Patients who developed delirium after surgery had more than twice the risk for severe decline in cognition than those who did not develop delirium (adjusted relative risk.

About 60% of older adults face slight cognitive decline over a period of 6 years after major surgery, a study finds.

It's basically stayed in the most widely read articles in JAD since we first published. 🎉
