“‘Hooper, Is That You?’: Two Army Nurses Reunited After Decades Apart”

Their story began at the Spencer Hospital School of Nursing in Meadville, Pennsylvania, a school that has since closed. While studying there, Chris and Judy both joined the Army Student Nurse Program and served as private first class for one year. After graduating, passing their nursing boards, and becoming registered nurses, they were commissioned into the U.S. Army as second lieutenants.

The two women did not initially serve together. Judy was stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey, where she met the man who would become her husband. Chris was stationed at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Colorado.

Their paths crossed again unexpectedly in October 1971—this time thousands of miles from home in Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. After Judy’s plane landed late that night, she was escorted to the nurses’ quarters, commonly called a “hootch.”

As she entered, a familiar voice called out through the darkness: “Hooper, is that you?” It was Chris.

Years after beginning their nursing journey together in Pennsylvania, the two Army nurses had been reunited in a most unlikely place—a military hospital compound in Vietnam.

The women remained in contact for many years, but in 1991, they lost touch. Judy never forgot her friend and eventually began searching for Chris again. After hearing that Chris might be living in a veterans nursing home in Colorado, Judy began looking through websites and pages, hoping to find some sign of her.

Then, Judy stumbled across our page—and lo and behold, there was Chris.

After more than three decades apart, Judy and Chris were finally reunited this week. Their long-awaited reunion was filled with tears, warm hugs and treasured stories from the many years they had spent apart.

Decades after Chris welcomed Judy to Vietnam with the unforgettable words, “Hooper, is that you?” the two Army nurses were together once again—reconnecting as friends and continuing a remarkable story that began in nursing school so many years ago.

Thank you to our Activities Director for sharing this wonderful heartfelt story. We couldn't love this more!

💜 Purple Heart Day is not about medals. It's about sacrifice.

It is a day to remember the moments when service members put themselves in harm's way, forever changing the course of their lives in defense of our nation and the freedoms we enjoy every day.

At Spanish Peaks Veterans Community Living Center, we are honored to know and care for veterans whose courage cannot be measured by ribbons or awards alone. Their strength, resilience, and quiet acts of service continue long after their military careers have ended.

Today, we honor those who bear the wounds of war, remember those who never came home, and express our deepest gratitude to all Purple Heart recipients. Your sacrifice is woven into the story of our nation, and your legacy lives on in the lives you touched and protected.

Thank you for your service. Thank you for your sacrifice. We will never forget.

For 10 years, Kay Whitley has led our organization with vision, courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to our mission. Through times of growth, challenge, transformation, and celebration, she has remained a steady force, inspiring all of us to aim higher, serve better, and lead with purpose.

What makes Kay exceptional isn't just what she has accomplished; it's how she has accomplished it. She has built relationships, developed leaders, championed innovation, and always kept people at the heart of every decision. Her influence reaches far beyond titles and achievements, evident in the culture she helped create and the lives she has touched along the way.

As if this milestone year wasn't special enough, Kay was also recently recognized on Becker's "CEOs to Know" 2026 list, a well-deserved honor that reflects what so many of us have known for years: her leadership is extraordinary.
