ER and IR testing in a rehabbing pitcher with the VALD Dynamo dynamometer

Here is how I use the VALD Dynamo dynamometer to measure external and internal rotation strength in a rehabbing pitcher, why the ER/IR ratio matters for throwing shoulder, and how this data informs a safer progression back to mound

Fix Your Shoulder Raises

One of the most common issues I see when people perform shoulder raises is a lack of core engagement. This can happen with front raises, full can exercises, lateral raises, and even overhead shoulder presses.

When you don’t engage your core, it’s really easy to sling the weights up using your low back, instead of your shoulders.

To fix this, engage your core AND your glutes prior to starting the exercise. This helps correct your form and also enhances functional core stability by training arm movements with a stable lumbopelvic area.

Is That Really Biceps Tendonitis?

🧠 Want to learn more from me? Head to my profile and click the "Learn More" button to see all my latest articles and podcasts.

Is That Really Biceps Tendonitis?

One of the more common things we see in the clinic is the person with anterior shoulder pain that blindly label it as ā€œbiceps tendonitis.ā€ Sometime they were told that by another healthcare provider, or they just assume that since it’s the front of their shoulder it must be the biceps. That’s what Google told them, at least! 😃

Believe it or not, I don’t think I personally see that much actual biceps tendonitis. I almost always tend to think it’s another structure. Look at all the muscle attachments that happen along the bicipital groove – the supraspinatus, subscapularis, pec, lat, and teres major.

The vast majority of time I end up ignoring the diagnosis of biceps tendonitis. Don’t just assume, evaluate these other muscles groups and find the real source of anterior shoulder pain.
