🚨 HEAT ALERT! 🚨

Already SWELTERING across the Lowcountry this morning!

It's not even 10:00 AM and the heat index on Johns Island is already 100Β°! πŸ₯΅

Please stay safe and stay cool today. Heat index values may reach 112Β° to 117Β° this afternoon.

πŸ₯΅ This is absolutely brutal! Some of the hottest feels-like temperatures we’ve seen this year are possible late this week.

Heat index values could climb over 100Β° across much of the Carolinas, with values near 114Β° along the coast.

Please keep this heat in mind for sports practices, after-school activities and anyone working outdoors. Frequent breaks, shade and plenty of water will be important.

Who’s ready for October? πŸ‚

As the first day of school approaches, Sheriff Duane Lewis recently met with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office School Resource Officers who will be serving our schools during the 2026-2027 school year.

This year, we're excited to welcome several new faces to the SRO Division. Throughout the summer, these deputies have been training and preparing to ensure they're ready to protect, mentor, and support our students, faculty, and staff from day one.

During the meeting, Sheriff Lewis discussed key safety initiatives with the team, including:
βœ… School safety and security plans
βœ… Improving school traffic flow
βœ… Active shooter response tactics
βœ… Increasing situational awareness
βœ… Building strong relationships with students and staff

When that first bell rings next week, our deputies will be ready.

Sheriff Lewis believes every child deserves to feel safe and secure while learning. That's why our School Resource Officers are committed to creating a safe environment where students can focus on what matters most... their education.

When your children walk through those school doors, they become our children too. We will do everything in our power to protect them and ensure they return home safely each day.

We wish all Berkeley County students, teachers, administrators, and school staff a safe, successful, and wonderful 2026-2027 school year! πŸ’™πŸŽ

🚨 There's a lot of speculation when emergency vehicles show up... We see it all the time:

"Why are there six patrol cars?"
"What's happening on my street?"
"Does anyone know what's going on?" πŸ‘€

Instead of guessing in the neighborhood Facebook group, here's your Berkeley County Emergency Vehicle Decoder.

πŸš“ : Someone discovered the speed limit wasn't a suggestion. Or we are answering an alarm call.

πŸš“ πŸš“ : One deputy said, "Hey... come look at this."

πŸš“ πŸš‘ : Someone is having a rough day, but help is here.

πŸš‘ : Either something is very much on fire... or someone burned dinner beyond recognition.

πŸš“ πŸ• : Goodest boi is getting a bad man!

🚀 : Somebody forgot the lake has rules too.

πŸͺ–πŸš“ πŸš“ πŸš“ πŸš“ : Yes, this will be on the five o’clock news.

Keep in mind, the number of emergency vehicles on scene doesn't always reflect how serious an incident is. Some calls require additional deputies for safety, multiple first responders for medical care, or specialized units with unique equipment and training.

Most importantly, if we're not posting about an incident right away, it's because our deputies and first responders are focused on safely handling the situation. Once we're able to share information, we will.

On Friday afternoon into the early evening, the sea breeze will interact with a slow-moving cold front, triggering scattered to numerous thunderstorms. Because storm motions are expected to stay slow (10 to 15 mph) and tap into near-record atmospheric moisture, these storms will be capable of highly efficient, torrential downpours. Some areas could see 2 to 4 inches of rain or more, particularly east of I-95. The graphic shows the probability of seeing 2 inches or more of rainfall from 3 to 9 PM on Friday. While minor flooding of roads and low-lying areas is the primary threat, flash flooding is possible if heavy rain sets up over urban locations like Summerville, College Park, Walterboro, North Charleston, Mount Pleasant, or Charleston.
