Things anxious millennials call “normal” that may actually be signs they grew up walking on eggshells:

1. Knowing someone’s upset before they say a word. You can tell by how they close a door, breathe, or respond to your text.
2. Feeling sick when someone says, “We need to talk.” Your mind immediately starts replaying everything you might’ve done wrong.
3. Overexplaining simple decisions. Because growing up, “because I wanted to” never felt like a safe enough answer.
4. Feeling guilty when someone is disappointed. Even when you’ve done nothing wrong, you feel responsible for making things better.
5. Being the “easygoing” friend or partner. You say “I’m fine with whatever” because having preferences once felt like creating problems.

You might call it your personality. But some of these patterns may have started as ways to feel emotionally safe.

Hi, I’m Torie, an LMSW and therapist who helps anxious women unlearn the habit of keeping everyone else happy at their own expense. 🫠

Imagine someone being upset with you and not immediately replaying the conversation, apologizing for something you didn’t do, or feeling responsible for fixing their mood.

That’s the kind of change we can work toward in therapy. Learning to feel safe having needs, setting boundaries, and choosing yourself without drowning in guilt.

✨ I’m accepting new virtual therapy clients in Georgia! Book your intake directly through the link in my bio.

Sometimes, what you call your personality is actually how you learned to protect yourself. 🫠

Being “easygoing” because having needs caused arguments. Overthinking because someone’s mood could change everything. Saying “I’m fine” because nobody ever knew what to do with your feelings.

You didn’t just become this way overnight.

You can understand everyone else’s feelings and still make room for your own. Even if nobody taught you now. 🫠

You can love your family and still have some childhood lore to unpack. 😅 Two things can be true.

Nothing like someone having a bad attitude to activate your childhood survival skills. 🫠

Suddenly, you’re 6 years old again, trying to prevent an emotional disaster you didn’t even cause.

10/21/2026

You’re exhausted from being understanding, accommodating everyone, and pretending things don’t bother you. 🫠

And the hardest part? You feel guilty the moment you finally choose yourself.

At some point, you have to ask yourself why everyone else’s comfort matters more than your own.

Absolutely terrifying. 😂
But really… growing up having your experiences constantly questioned can leave you second-guessing yourself well into adulthood.
Now you're explaining every little detail, saving screenshots, rehearsing conversations, and wondering if you're being too sensitive when something hurts your feelings.
Sometimes it's not even about proving what happened anymore. It's about wanting someone to acknowledge that your feelings were real.

POV: Me realizing my childhood trauma has been running the show for way too long. 🫠

But really… sometimes the things you learned to do to protect yourself as a child become the very patterns that leave you exhausted as an adult.

Overthinking every conversation. Feeling responsible for everyone’s emotions. Struggling to say no without feeling guilty.

And lately, those patterns might feel even louder because you’re navigating situations that remind your nervous system of times when you didn’t feel emotionally safe.

You may not be that child anymore, but some of those old survival patterns are still showing up.

You’re in your 30s, and somehow it feels like everyone else has life figured out but you.

Your friends are getting married, buying homes, having babies, or moving up in their careers. Meanwhile, you’re wondering if you’re falling behind.

But when you constantly measure your life against someone else’s timeline, even your biggest accomplishments can start to feel small.

You deserve to feel proud of the life you’re building, even if it looks different than you imagined.

Ready to work through the anxiety, comparison, and feeling of never being enough?

I offer virtual therapy for adults throughout Georgia. My practice is self-pay, with limited sliding-scale availability.
