If you have a backyard flock of chickens, this is important information.
HPAI is spread by wild birds, especially waterfowl. Protect your backyard flocks from. interactions with wild birds by limiting things like bird feeders and other things attractive to wild birds if you have backyard chickens.
Domestic cats that come in contact with infected wild birds are also at risk.

BULLETIN: Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS) confirmed Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in one backyard poultry flock in Pierce County. We remain ready to protect animal health within the state. Please see Detections of HPAI for more information about cases across the United States.

IS YOUR PET ON HEARTWORM PREVENTATIVE?
The America Heartworm Society (AHS) has released a new Heartworm incidence map, using data collected from veterinary practices and shelters across the US.

For the first time, Texas topped the list of leading states for heartworm incidence. The remaining top 5 were Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, South Carolina. Rounding out the top 10 states were Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, Florida and Georgia.

Almost 3 in 5 Veterinarians (59%) said heartworm rates had stayed the same, with the remainder divided between those who saw rates increase (19%) and decrease (22%) Only 10% reported seeing no heartworm cases.

While weather was seen as a factor in changes to heartworm rates, Veterinarians see "human" factors including poor compliance and heartworm-positive dogs moving into their practice areas as even more significant.

Here at Houston Lake Animal Hospital, we have seen an INCREASE in heartworm positive dogs, so please make sure your pets are taking their preventative regularly!

So for now, they are saying the ice will stay north of us, so we are planning to e open regular hours on Monday. HOWEVER, if there is ice on the roads, we will be closed until streets are passable. Because the weather people could be wrong, we recommend that if you need any meds refilled or your pet is "not quite right", that you may want to come in today or tomorrow and not wait, just in case!

Because I had several questions on why my horses were not wearing blankets, I am sharing information on how blanketing decisions are made. My horses have a warm dry barn right behind them that they usually go into if it's raining, but they decided they didn't mind the snow. My older horses not in the picture were actually blanketed, but these are young fat horses in the pic.
I decide who gets blanketed based on: if they are very old, very young or thin or do not have a good winter coat. If it gets below 20 or is very windy and they have an open sided shelter so that I think the wind could ruffle their fur, I will blanket them even if fat. But I blanketed one of my older mares last night and by this morning, she had taken her blanket off. She was standing in the barn however, so was nice and warm.

As we manage our horses in the colder weather, the question arises of whether or not to blanket your horse. Find out more from TEVA!
