Today was one of those full-circle moments I’ll never forget.

Twenty-one years after graduating from Mercer University’s Marriage and Family Therapy program (Class of 2005), I had the privilege of returning to speak with the incoming MFT students.

I shared the winding path from graduate student to therapist… and eventually to owning Lyons Center, where I now have the privilege of leading an incredible team of clinicians who serve our community every day.

One of the biggest messages I wanted them to hear is this:

Your career probably won’t unfold exactly the way you’ve planned. Mine certainly didn’t. But sometimes the unexpected turns become the most meaningful parts of the journey.

If you’re willing to keep learning, stay curious, ask for help, and care well for the people sitting across from you, you’ll build a career you can be proud of.

Thank you, Mercer, for inviting me back. It was an honor to spend time with the next generation of marriage and family therapists.

I’ve been spending my Monday in a training on anxiety, and one idea really stands out to me.

When we’re emotionally overwhelmed, our brains don’t like uncertainty. We instinctively fill in the blanks about what other people are thinking, feeling, or intending.

The catch is that we usually fill those blanks with our greatest fears—not with facts.

As therapists, we often encourage clients to separate the facts from the story. The truth is, we all need that reminder sometimes.

The next time you notice yourself jumping to conclusions, pause and ask:

“What do I actually know to be true?”

Sometimes that simple question is enough to quiet anxiety’s narrative and make room for a healthier response.

Have you experienced this yourself?

One of the biggest mistakes couples make during conflict is matching negative energy.

When one partner becomes upset, the other often responds with the same intensity. Before long, the conversation isn’t about solving the issue anymore, it’s about defending positions.

A healthier approach is to match positive energy instead of negative energy.

Slow down. Stay calm. Get curious about what your partner is actually feeling underneath the frustration. When we listen to understand, instead of listening to respond, the entire tone of the conversation can change.

Conflict doesn’t have to destroy connection. Sometimes they can strengthen it, when both partners feel heard.
