“To confront a person with his shadow is to show him his own light. Once one has experienced a few times what it is like to stand judgingly between the opposites, one begins to understand what is meant by the self. Anyone who perceives his shadow and his light simultaneously sees himself from two sides and thus gets in the middle." ~Carl Jung

A New Year dawns under an intensely driven Saturn-ruled Capricorn New Moon, 1-2-2022. What a set of numbers! Our New Year 2022 adds up to 6, symbolized by The Lovers card in the tarot, representing relationships with one another and one's self, or a decision we may be facing. When I pulled "The Reflector" archetype card I thought of the 2 of Cups in tarot, also thought of as a relationship card like The Lovers, but often represents self-acceptance, unity, and integration with our shadow self.
Nick Bantock, creator of The Archeo deck, says: "The Reflector mirrors you back without distortion, artifice, or bias, showing you as you really are, both inside and out. If you can acknowledge that truth without flinching, then you will have moved a long way towards self-acceptance." The stern countenances reflect the harsh aspect to Chiron in Aries we have under this New Moon, where we are confronted with our wounds surrounding the masculine energies of authority, structure, drive, etc. How are we too harsh with ourselves? How can we soften the tension and bring in a sense of ease and light in the heavy darkness of this world?
Like the Hermit card in the Tarot, The Illuminator card “holds a candle aloft against blackness. This is the light of consciousness that gives all our senses meaning...Without the dark, light is rendered meaningless, and without light, darkness obliterates all things. Each needs the other to exist...Ultimately there is no choice between light and dark; that is an illusion, and our humanity is not defined by such hard and fast contrasts. It exists in the soft edges of shadow where light and dark gently touch. The Illuminator walks at the head of the column, beacon in hand, directing those who journey with integrity along the safest of paths."
Going into this new year, how can we gently embody these archetypes with ourselves, one another, and our world? What needs to be reflected and illuminated? Let us be beacons of light for each other, and may we reflect each other's light, in all its beautiful rawness.
