Next up, we are highlighting Dr. Lawrence Goriel in our Senior Send-Off series!

✨ Next Stop:
Emergency Medicine Physician at AdventHealth Winter Garden, Florida

💙 Favorite Residency Moments:
One of Dr. Goriel’s most memorable cases began when EMS arrived bagging a patient who had choked and collapsed during dinner and LMA was placed after a failed field intubation. During airway evaluation, he discovered that the LMA had effectively pushed a massive piece of steak directly over the patient’s trachea. Using a glide-scope and Magill forceps, he removed the obstruction in what felt more like a high-stakes game of Operation than medicine. While the outcome served as a sobering reminder of how fragile life can be, the case left a lasting impression and ensured he’ll never look at a ribeye the same way again.

🌟 Words for the Next Wave:
Master the clinical skill of relying on your physical exam and intuition to drive throughput, but never rush your own education. When a rare procedure or a complex resuscitation comes down the wire at change of shift, stay late to get your hands dirty—efficiency can be learned tomorrow, but the confidence gained from high-stakes experience is worth every extra minute.

We wish you the best in your future endeavors, Dr. Goriel!

🌟 Words for the Next Wave:
Every day is a gift — make the most of it

You can’t be a good ER doctor if you’re not a little bit of a rebel 😎

Thank you, Dr. Purdy-Sachs, for the countless ways you’ve impacted this program, your co-residents and patients! We will miss you greatly.

✨ Next Stop:
Blanchard Valley Hospital in Findlay, Ohio

💙 Favorite Residency Moments:
As an intern in the ICU, accompanying a patient and their family alongside Gift of Life during a Walk of Honor through the ICU halls as they prepared to help save the lives of others through organ donation.

🌟 Words for the Next Wave:
Be aware of and okay with your limits as both a physician and a human

Patients may not always present in a textbook manner, and treatments may not always work as expected

The most valuable thing you can offer your patients is your respect and genuine concern for their wellbeing

“There is no certainty, only opportunity.”
