The Mayo Clinic suggests these preventative steps2:

Schedule your appointment for your routine eye exam.
Wear sunglasses with UV protection.
Manage other health related problems such as diabetes.
Don’t smoke.
Reduce alcohol intake.
Choose a healthier diet that consists of fruits and vegetables.
