We can learn a lot about movement from the children around us! Children incorporate movement into their daily lives in natural and spontaneous ways. In fact, sitting still is something they have to learn, because their natural inclination is to move.

Children also have fun with movement. They don't need a gym membership, fancy equipment, or an accountability partner. Movement is something they enjoy. They run, jump, wiggle, and play without thinking about how good it is for them.

Take some time to think about how often you move throughout your day as an adult. If your job requires you to sit for eight hours a day, are there ways to break it up?

Remember that movement doesn't have to be strenuous! It could be as simple as walking to the water fountain, standing up for a phone call, or discreetly stretching in your seat.

Let's learn from these little ones and rediscover the joy of movement in this week's blog, "Movement Lessons From Kids."

Try something new! Everything is exciting for little ones because it is new; don't let the kids have all the fun.

Doing something different can be energizing. It helps us get out of the ruts we adults so often find ourselves in.

Finding a new activity on your own or with others can be scary at first, but you might end up finding something you love.

It can be something active - like a new sport, dance class, or gardening. It could be a new hobby - like art, writing, or reading.

You might even find that changing a current hobby can make it more exciting. For example, if you always go hiking in the same forest preserve, change up the spot. If you always read historical fiction books, try a mystery.

How can you embrace new adventures in your life?

Little ones find joy in the ordinary. Everything is new to them, and they haven't lost the wonder.

How can we bring some of that wonder back into our lives? Are there things you enjoyed and got away from?

For adults, we generally have to be intentional about slowing down to find the magic in the ordinary.

It doesn't have to take long, though. We can look for moments of magic throughout our day and take just a couple of minutes to enjoy it when we find one.

Every cell in your body contains protein, and it fulfills many different roles in the body. Since the body does not store protein, it depends on your diet to provide adequate amounts.

You don't have to adopt a keto or carnivore diet to get the protein you need, but making some changes can make a big difference.

When you start looking at your current intake, you may be surprised by how little you are actually getting. Once you know your typical intake, you can set goals to increase it as necessary

As you make these changes, it is important to recognize that not all proteins are the same. We need to be informed consumers to provide our bodies with the nutrients they need; choosing the right kinds of quality protein is a big part of that.

Let’s look at the healthiest ways for you to get this protein in this week's blog, "Are You Getting Enough Protein?"

Summer’s here, and the kids are out of school. You may be planning time for outdoor adventures, parks, picnics, and the pool. The summer can be the highlight of a kid's year.

However, it can be challenging for parents. Kids can get restless and whine about being bored. Despite the sunshine, they may start to count down the days until school begins again.

There are some ways we can set our kids up for a great summer; one of them is letting go and not filling the calendar with tons of activities. It may feel counterintuitive, but there’s value in giving our kids more unstructured time where we don’t feel the need to entertain them.

Independent play gives them the opportunity to…
- negotiate and cooperate with others.
- explore their own interests.
- develop creativity.
- practice independence and decision-making.
- move their body in a more functional way.

What this looks like will vary from family to family and child to child, depending on what you think they are ready for. For a very young child, independent play may mean shadowing them on the playground, rather than directing their play. For an older child, it might be bringing a book to the park, so you can sit to the side and let them play alone with an adult nearby in case of an emergency. Eventually, you might think they are old enough to go with some of their trusted friends.

It can help to give kids access to a wide variety of raw materials for fun. Things like art supplies, an outdoor space to explore, and freedom to make a little bit of a mess (they can clean it up when they are done) can go a long way.

Brene Brown studied the connection between joy and gratitude. She thought the research would show that joy led to gratitude; however, it was the other way around. You can increase your level of gratitude through gratitude practices.

Gratitude practices are different than having an "attitude of gratitude" or "looking on the bright side of things." For one thing, it is much more intentional than just being optimistic or thankful from time to time. It brings a little bit of structure to a concept that is so abstract.

Since it's free, does not take much time, and can be done in the privacy of your own home, it may be worth developing a gratitude practice. There are many ways to create a practice of gratitude

Let’s explore how to lean into gratefulness while honoring the hard aspects of our lives in this week's blog, "Gratitude & Joy."

As the weather gets warmer, make sure you embrace the beautiful days by getting outside! Being outside is good for both your physical and mental well-being. This is true for both children and adults.

Sunshine and nature tend to boost your mood, and many people naturally become more physically active when they are outside on a regular basis. Take advantage of the nice weather we've been waiting for.

There are so many amazing places to enjoy the outdoors. Where are you exploring this weekend?

Summer can be the highlight of a kid's year, but they can also struggle with boredom if they have extra time at home. You may run low on ideas to keep them entertained, and start counting down the days until school begins again.

That is no fun for anyone, and you all deserve to enjoy your summer. I want to remind you that we don't need to fill every day with activities or constantly entertain our kids. There’s value in giving our kids some unstructured time.

It may feel counterintuitive, but sometimes letting them figure out what to do on their own will bring more joy than anything we could plan. So, while children might not appreciate it, remind yourself that, at times, "boredom is a gift."

Let’s look at the benefits of unstructured play and consider how it might look for your family in this week's blog, "Thriving or Surviving the Summer With Kids."

It's dark outside. Are you getting into your PJs?

While it is tempting to scroll on our phone, we will feel so much better if we set it aside and prioritize getting a good night's rest.

Sometimes getting ready for bed is the biggest challenge. We may procrastinate for a number of reasons, but it often just becomes a habit.

Consider getting ready for bed right now, and then coming back to scrolling if you still want to once you are in your PJs.

You might find it breaks the cycle of mindless scrolling and sets you up to be more intentional about the rest of your evening.

Getting enough protein is crucial for everyone, even if you are not an elite athlete or a bodybuilder. You literally cannot survive without protein. Since the body does not store protein, your diet must provide adequate amounts.

Many people require significantly more protein than they are consuming. Some people worry that protein will cause them to gain weight, but I believe enough protein is crucial to being a healthy weight.

How much protein do you need? What kind should you have? The answer is nuanced, but I'll give you some good guidelines to get you started. From there, you can listen to how your body feels and make adjustments.

Let’s look at these things and explore the healthiest ways to get protein in this week's blog, "It's Not Just for Bodybuilders."
