ADVOCACY SPOTLIGHT: Thelma Perry Brown

Today we shine our Advocacy Spotlight on Thelma Brown, two-time breast cancer survivor and board member of the Inflammatory Breast Cancer Research Foundation (IBCRF).

Thelma recently brought her powerful voice and advocacy to the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Convention in Atlanta, participating in the panel discussion, “Who Tells Our Story? Breast Cancer, Women of Color, and the Media.”

The conversation explored the important role journalists and media professionals play in telling the stories of women of color impacted by breast cancer, addressing health disparities, challenging misinformation, and helping communities access lifesaving information.

Through her work with IBCRF and her commitment to breast cancer advocacy, Thelma continues to ensure that the experiences of women affected by inflammatory breast cancer and breast cancer disparities are seen, heard, and represented.

Caregivers devote so much of themselves to supporting others—but they need support, too.

While attending a recent conference, NCBC’s Sylvia Powers connected with the team behind Powerful Tools for Caregivers, a six-week virtual program designed to help caregivers reduce stress, solve problems, communicate confidently, and care for their own well-being while caring for someone else.

The upcoming virtual series will be held Fridays from September 11 through October 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The cost is $60. Caregivers of Iowa cancer survivors may participate at no cost through funding from the Iowa Cancer Consortium by using the coupon code CANCERIOWA when registering.

Our foundation remains firmly rooted in breast care. Yet for more than a decade, NCBC’s work has continued to expand across the cancer continuum—supporting interdisciplinary professional education, oncology navigation, hospital and team development, quality improvement, and certification.

This broader impact is reflected in programs such as our Cancer Genetics Risk Assessment (CGRA™) credential, which encompasses hereditary risk assessment across multiple cancers, and our newly developed Certified Clinical Oncology Navigator (CCON™) certification, with beta testing planned for early January 2027.
