Legacy Family Health Care has a new employee. Some of you may have seen Var during Thanksgiving Break and Christmas Break. Var is Pre-Med Student at Indiana University-Bloomington with the goal of becoming a neurologist. His undergraduate major is Neroscience. Lindsay and Rhonda genuinely enjoy mentoring, giving advice, and being a part of Var’s journey. Having Var as a Certified Medical Assistant, which he earned while attending Warsaw High School, has been a welcomed addition to our staff, even if it is only durning his college breaks. This May Var will return to the office part time while preparing for his MCAT. Legacy prides itself on being an educational practice for those pursuing certifications and degrees in healthcare. Lindsay and Rhonda find sharing their career experiences to be very rewarding. Good luck this next semester at IU Var and we will see you in the spring!

We’ve seen an increase in Monoucleosis come into our office over the last few weeks.

Mononucleosis, commonly known as mono, is a viral infection caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Common symptoms of mono are extreme fatigue, fever, sore throat, head and body aches, swollen lymph glands and chills.

Here are some ways to care for mono:

Rest:
• Get plenty of rest to allow your body to fight the infection.

Hydration:
• Drink plenty of fluids, such as water, juice, or electrolyte solutions, to prevent dehydration.

Nutrition:
• Eat a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
• Avoid caffeine and alcohol, as they can dehydrate you.

Medications:
• Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help relieve fever, sore throat, and headache.
• Antiviral medications are not typically prescribed for mono.

Avoid Strenuous Activity:
• Avoid contact sports and other strenuous activities that could put pressure on your spleen.

Monitor for Complications:
• In rare cases, mono can lead to complications, such as splenomegaly (enlarged spleen) or liver inflammation.

Other Tips:
• Wash your hands frequently to prevent spreading the virus.
• Avoid sharing personal items, such as utensils, cups, or toothbrushes.
• Stay home from work or school until you feel better to prevent spreading the infection.

Most people recover from mono within 2-4 weeks. However, some people may experience fatigue or other symptoms for longer.

If you suspect you have mono, see a health care provider for diagnosis and treatment. It’s important to get medical attention to rule out other possible conditions and to ensure proper care.

It’s Legacy’s Women’s Wednesday!

This week our staff member is one of our CMA’s Trista. Trista is our fearless leader Lindsay’s assistant.

How long have you been with Legacy and what got you started?

I will be with Legacy a year this November!! I wanted to stay in healthcare but was ready for a change of positive scenery!

How long have you been in healthcare and what got you started?

I’ve been in healthcare for 22 years. I started at a nursing home and fell in love with caring for the elderly. I wanted a “big girl job” while in high school. I have since fell in love with mental health and now primary care!

Do you plan to pursue further into the medical field? If so, in what and why? If not, what’s one thing you love about your job?

I’m still deciding if I want to pursue further into the medical field. One thing I love about my job is seeing new faces and hearing about others lives to help them be understood and cared for! I love reminding patients to listen to their body because they know best! I also love my coworkers who have quickly become my family!

Tell us one fun fact about yourself:

I have 2 dogs, Millie and Milo, and 5 nephews who are all my whole world!! 🌎💜

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

What is domestic violence?
Domestic violence is defined as a pattern of abusive behavior in any personal relationship that allows one partner to gain or maintain power and control over the other. This can include various forms of abuse such as physical, emotional, economic, and sexual violence, as well as intimidation and coercion.

Domestic violence is a major issue that affects millions of people in the United States and around the world. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men are victims of some form of physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime. Approximately 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. And approximately 20,000 calls are placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide on a typical day.

Victims of domestic violence often face severe physical and psychological consequences, including chronic health problems and disabilities.

The domestic violence statistics clearly show that abuse- whether it’s physical, emotional, sexual, or financial- happens far too often. Many survivors don’t even report what happened, which means the real numbers may be even higher!

Putting an end to domestic violence starts by believing in survivors, making sure they have safe places to go, and working together to create a safer future for all.

Domestic violence hotline: (800)799-SAFE or (800)799-7233
They also have 24/7 access texting. Just text START to 88788

You may also contact our office at (574)575-4987 and we can help you get the help you need.

If you’re in a domestic violence relationship, please know you are not alone 💜

Legacy Family Health Care is doing a get to know the staff every Wednesday for the next few weeks and we are calling it Legacy’s Women’s Wednesday! Every staff member will be asked the same questions every week and will posted with a picture of said staff member.

Our very first staff member has to be one of our receptionists Jasmine as it’s her birthday today! 🥳

How long have you been with Legacy and what got you started?

I have been with Legacy for a little over 2 months now and I started here because one of the girls reached out to me saying that they were looking for another front desk receptionist as well as someone who is bilingual.

How long have you been in healthcare and what got you started?

I have been in healthcare for about 2 months now. I have always had a passion for the medical field but always underestimated myself to go into the field, education wise.

Do you plan to pursue further into the medical field?

I do plan on pursuing further into the medical field. Since starting here, my passion for this field has grown even more. I will be starting classes to earn my CMA certification, here soon. The girls here are a big part of that- they have been nothing but inspiring and supportive.

Tell us one fun fact about yourself:

I have 48 first cousins just on my dad’s side alone; it’s amazing 🫶🏽

Happy Birthday Jasmine hope you have a fantastic day! 🎉
