This weeks recap: the arrival fallacy, why the treadmill never turns off, and the question you can ask yourself to get to the sweet spot of both enjoy enjoying something now and building something important for later.

Constantly serving. Constantly accommodating. Rarely asking what you actually need.

Self-sacrifice is over-focusing on other people's needs while minimizing your own, and it often comes with guilt. Guilt for resting. Guilt for saying no. Guilt for needing help or having limits at all.

Subjugation is quieter, but just as costly: suppressing your preferences and needs because expressing them feels unsafe, selfish, or disruptive. This is where people-pleasing is born.

Put them together, and you get a life built around everyone else's needs, one where you rarely stop to ask what this is costing you.

In Episode 230 of Drive Time Debrief, we name these two patterns and what they're actually doing to physicians.

To start to get out of the “rat race,” ask yourself a question. “How do I enjoy today AND move toward what matters for my future? Is there anyway they can overlap?” an overlap isn’t mandatory every time, but looking for it increases your odds of finding it. Just notice that each day is not a binary choice between hedonism and the rat race. You can have a daily practice of looking for the sweet spot that benefits the version of you now and the future version of you.

I’ll rest after this next thing is just procrastination wearing a nicer outfit. Tim Urban‘s “The Tail End” reminds us that time, including with our kids, is finite and depleting faster than it feels. Later isn’t a scheduled time, it’s an avoidance strategy. Don’t defer enjoying your life. Learn to mix in a little fun and enjoy the journey along the way to something meaningful.

Every doc knows the colleague who put everything off for the sake of the job. Who was waiting to start truly living. And then it didn’t go that way. Remembering that can be the reset you need now. Enjoy the journey now as you’re working toward something meaningful.

You don't owe anyone a courtroom defense for saying no.

So many physicians over-explain their limits, hoping the other person will approve of the boundary before they'll believe it's allowed. But a boundary that needs someone else's permission isn't really a boundary, it's a request.

Clear is not cold. Clear is compassionate.

In Episode 230 of Drive Time Debrief, we talk about what a clean boundary actually sounds like. No essay, no defense brief, no guilt spiral required.

There’s a name for the box most of us live in and usually it’s not the one we want. The arrival fallacy keeps you in the rat race, but the sweet spot is to both have a future goal you’re working toward AND enjoy the ride. 🎢

Have you checked every box on the recipe and you still feel like you’re waiting to be “done.“ Turns out that feeling was never coming when we’re stuck in arrival fallacy. When you reach a goal, you feel great transiently, but it doesn’t stick for Long. This week we’re talking about the arrival fallacy and what to do instead.
