What is assisted hatching? 🐣

Embryo or blastocyst hatching is a natural step in the series of events leading up to implantation. Hatching is when an opening forms in the zona pellucida (ZP) and the embryo “comes out of
its shell.”

⭐️Assisted hatching, is when an embryologist artificially “hatches” the embryo. An embryo can be hatched in multiple ways:
▶️Mechanically – using a glass microneedle
▶️Chemically – thinning the ZP with acidified Tyrode solution
▶️Laser photoablation

⭐️Reasons for assisted hatching:
▶️Opening the embryo on day 3 or 5 to facilitate embryo biopsy
▶️Collapsing the embryo prior to freezing
▶️To improve implantation and live birth rate prior to embryo transfer

❓DOES AH IMPROVE LIVE BIRTH RATES WITH FRESH EMBRYO TRANSFER?

❌Live birth rates are not significantly different between embryos that have undergone AH vs. those that have not.

❓DOES AH IMPROVE LIVE BIRTH RATES WITH FROZEN EMBRYO TRANSFERS?
🤔The data are mixed regarding improvement in live birth rate with laser-AH.

❓DOES AH INCREASE MONOZYGOTIC
TWINNING?

🧐There is insufficient evidence to definitely conclude that AH is associated with MZT, as the outcome is rare and the available studies have conflicting findings.

Solving the mystery of when to have a full bladder or empty bladder in the REI clinic 🤔

Have a full bladder for:
➡️Embryo transfer
➡️Any abdominal ultrasound
➡️intrauterine insemination

Have an empty bladder for:
➡️Egg retrieval
➡️Saline infusion ultrasound (SIS)
➡️Any transva**nal ultrasound (where the transducer is placed in the va**na) such as IVF follicle monitoring
