PCOS has a new name: PMOS, or Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome.
The change is more than a new acronym. The previous name, Polycystic O***y Syndrome, placed the focus on ovarian “cysts,” even though the condition is much more complex and affects hormonal and metabolic health throughout the body.
The new name better reflects that broader picture:
Polyendocrine recognizes the involvement of multiple hormone systems.
Metabolic reflects the condition’s effects on metabolism.
Ovarian recognizes its effects on ovarian function.
The name was selected following a global consensus process that included women with lived experience alongside healthcare professionals and patient and professional organizations.
For WomenHeart, the inclusion of metabolic is especially important. PMOS can be associated with cardiovascular risk factors, reinforcing why heart health should be part of the conversation about this condition.
This , we’ll be sharing more about PMOS and what women should know about the connection to their heart health.
