RFK’s deprescribing anti-depressants is a great idea but it will worsen already disastrous mental health care in US. This article does great job describing why it will not work in our current system. I would only add that even if we had great mental health care with enough insurance coverage for talk therapy deprescribing still will not work. Mental health disorders have many functional medicine drivers and until we realize and address these drivers deprescribing anti-depressants will remain a mirage. Just take methylation and gut dysbiosis, only 2 issues, but they occur in probably upwards of half of all patients which chronic depression and most psychiatrist don’t even know how to assess this properly, not just how to treat it.

Deprescribing is a good goal but neither our system nor our policy landscape support it

I'm excited to share a discussion of our newly published observational study evaluating the ReCODE® protocol for patients with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease.

Our findings add to a growing body of evidence supporting a personalized, multifactorial approach to cognitive health—one that looks beyond a single medication to address nutrition, sleep, exercise, metabolic health, inflammation, toxins, stress, and other potentially modifiable contributors.

This is not the final word, and observational studies have important limitations. However, I believe these results provide another encouraging step toward a more comprehensive and personalized model of dementia care.

Tune in live each week as we explore all things and 🌱

💡 Join us for A Mindfulness Experience Fridays 2-3PM EST on Zoom 💡

This week, we welcome special guests Mikhail (Misha) Kogan MD and Alyson Gluecksmann!

Mikhail (Misha) Kogan MD is the Chief Medical Officer of GWCIM and the Founding Director of AIM Health Institute. Dr Kogan has extensive training and expertise in internal medicine, geriatrics, palliative care, social and primary care medicine, integrative medicine, herbal medicine, and craniosacral therapy. He specializes in diagnosing and developing treatment plans for the most complex health challenges, offering hope to even the most desperate patients. He is a Professor of Medicine at The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences.

Alyson Gluecksmann, C-IAYT, E-RYT 500, began practicing yoga in her early 20s as a way to manage the stress of work and the demands of running. It wasn’t until she became a mom, though, that yoga truly became a meaningful tool for self-care, resilience, and balance. In her classes, Alyson aims to empower clients to feel strong, grounded, and adaptable—encouraging curiosity, self-reflection, and a sense of humor when things get challenging.

Could medical cannabis help patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS)?

Chronic pain, poor sleep, fatigue, anxiety, and reduced quality of life are common challenges for people living with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD). Unfortunately, many patients continue to struggle despite conventional treatments.

In this video, I review two important new publications that add to the growing evidence supporting medical cannabis as a potential therapeutic option for carefully selected patients with EDS. The findings suggest meaningful improvements in pain, sleep, mood, and overall quality of life, while also explaining how the endocannabinoid system may play an important role in this complex condition.

While more randomized clinical trials are still needed, I believe that patients with moderate to severe EDS whose symptoms remain poorly controlled should consider discussing a carefully supervised trial of medical cannabis with a healthcare provider experienced in cannabinoid medicine.

I hope this review helps patients and clinicians better understand where the current evidence stands and supports more informed, evidence-based conversations about treatment options.

Can psychedelic medicine help us age with greater meaning and resilience?

The science surrounding psychedelic therapies is evolving rapidly, with growing research exploring their potential role in depression, anxiety, existential distress, and emotional well-being—particularly later in life.

In our newest GW Integrative Medicine Podcast, we speak with Abbie Rosner, author of Psychedelics and the Counterculture of Aging, about the emerging evidence, conscious aging, and how psychedelics may influence the future of integrative healthcare.
