Curious why your Acupuncturist checks your pulse before starting your treatment?

Pulse diagnosis is a system of medical evaluation that involves palpation of different arteries to gain information about a patient. Like TCM, pulse diagnosis has been around for thousands of years and is based on the observations and hypotheses of hundreds of thousands of practitioners. Traditionally, there are 9 places to take the pulse on the body, but today most practitioners focus on the radial artery at the wrist.

Pulse diagnosis is based on the practitioner’s observation and experience and it does work. However, it is an inherently subjective form of diagnosis so, we use the information gathered from your pulse in combination with our other forms of diagnosis to determine the best plan of care for each patient.

You know the feeling. It's 11pm, you're exhausted, and your brain is still running through tomorrow's calendar. You finally fall asleep and wake up three hours later, wired again. By the time your alarm goes off, you're behind before the day even starts.

If this is your normal, you're not broken and you're not alone. Stress is the single most common thing we treat at our acupuncture clinic in Washington, DC. It shows up almost exactly the same way for a lot of patients. Tired body, racing mind, a nervous system that never quite gets the memo to stand down.

The good news is that this pattern responds well to treatment. You deserve better than white-knuckling through another sleepless week.

Treating UTIs and Interstitial Cystitis with Chinese Medicine

Many patients we see in our Washington, DC acupuncture clinic suffer from urinary tract infections (UTIs), cystitis, or other types of urinary and bladder conditions. Though these conditions are more common in women, they also affect men as well.

Many of these conditions, like UTIs, are infections. Other conditions, like interstitial cystitis, are autoimmune or inflammatory in nature and don’t always involve an infection.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has many tools that can help with a variety of urinary and bladder conditions. Whether they are infections or autoimmune conditions, both acupuncture and Chinese herbs are very effective tools for treatment.

Many of these conditions are also responsive to lifestyle and dietary changes, which our team can also recommend.

Many people think that supplements and herbs are the same thing. They aren’t. Supplements typically focus on a single ingredient that is deficient, such as magnesium. The focus for the supplement is adding more of that vitamin, mineral, amino acid, microbial, or botanical substance to the body. Supplements are great for many things and they can be very helpful when there is a deficiency in one area.

Chinese herbal medicine, however, works differently. We prescribe customized herbal formulas based on your constitution, symptoms, and your pattern which allows us to treat more than a single deficiency. Instead, herbs treat the root cause by correcting whatever imbalance is present. For example, if you have too much dampness in the body, as can happen with arthritis and joint pain, the herbs we prescribe will help drain the dampness and help your joints feel better. If you have migraines caused by too much stress, we have herbal formulas that can help calm the body and remove the excess or stagnated Qi that is contributing to migraines. Whatever issue you have, the herbs work to correct that imbalance and bring your body into medical equilibrium.

If you have a condition that hasn’t been corrected by supplements, I encourage you to give a customized herbal formula a try. All acupuncturists at Cherry Blossom are board-certified acupuncturists and herbalists and would be very happy to make you herbs at your next visit. You deserve to feel better!

☀️ Sanfu Wellness: Ultra-Simple Checklist

During the Dog Days of Summer (Sanfu), your body is hot on the outside, cold on the inside, and high in dampness. TCM calls for two core goals: Clear Dampness, Protect Yang.

💡 The "3 To Eat" & "3 To Avoid"

3 To Eat:
🫚 Ginger: Consume in the morning to warm the gut, expel inner cold, and protect digestion.
🥒 Gourds (Winter Melon, Luffa): Natural diuretics that clear heat and flush out excess dampness.
🫘 Beans (Mung Beans, Adzuki Beans): Clear internal heat, detoxify, and drain humidity.

3 To Avoid:
❌ Iced Drinks & Frozen Foods: Damaged gut energy (Spleen Yang) and trap moisture inside.
❌ Heavy & Greasy Meals: Hard to digest; creates phlegm and worsens internal dampness.
❌ Excessive Nourishing Herbs (e.g., Ginseng): Causes internal heat buildup and breakouts.
