This is a story that every dancer has gone thru.

The difference is the thing that's on the line.
For me that was missing out on being able to go home for my grandmother's funereal

I had already started my dance program at and couldn't leave to go home

So when I got hurt, I was immediately lost.

I expected the physical challenges, but not like this .
Noone ever spoke to me about injuries - it was never mentioned.
And now that i was here , this was a mental and emotional challenge that I had idea of how to handle or any solutions.

The scariest place for a dancer to be is injured - because suddenly in the blink of an eye - everyone you hold dear in on the line.

And you have to battle that along with

The fear of falling behind.
The frustration of not recognizing my own body.
The quiet panic of wondering if Iโ€™d ever get back to where I was.
And in all of that, I kept thinking:

Not just the injury.

Find the soft tissue behind the ball of your foot.
Place the lacrosse ball there,
Shift your pelvis forward so that your weight in on your front foot -
Roll from 1st to the 5th metatarsals

๐˜ฝ๐™–๐™˜๐™  ๐™ค๐™› ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™›๐™ค๐™ค๐™ฉ:
For the back of the foot place the ball right in front of the heel , again shift your weight forward to get that sustained pressure and roll from one side of the heel to the other.

Be sure to breathe as you go thru this - the goal isnโ€™t to get as much pain or pressure as possible, but to access the deeper layers so you can get the stretch you need thatโ€™s going to help with your heel and foot pain

I grew up dancing, singing, and playing musical instruments โ€” performing was my entire world. I also suffered from exercise induced migraines that would come on when we had long days of dancing and rehearsing in preparation for shows. I remember one specific time that I felt this headache coming on in the middle of an important rehearsal, and as much as I fought to hold it off, it won.

And I was devastated.

As a performer, you've been here before

- the frustration that comes when your body stopped obeying your commands
- the shame that you've lost control
- the fear that you'll never get that opportunity again to perform

I was fortunatne to have my dance teacher, Ms. Patricia Roe be my guiding light in that instance. She pressed on different points on my hands and made my pain go away

That planted a seed to connecting someone moving my body to feeling better and being able to perform

I went into physical therapy because I knew there had to be a better way to care for performing artists โ€” people whose bodies ARE their career. Today, I am that better way. Performance Plus Physical Therapy was built from that exact gap and experience.

By the time I was a teenager, I had a front-row seat to what performing arts demands from a body. I also had a front-row seat to how badly the sports medicine world misunderstood those demands.

Dance injuries are not the same as sports injuries. A sprained ankle in a dancer requires a completely different return protocol than a sprained ankle in a tennis player. The range demands, the artistry requirements, the psychological pressure to perform through pain โ€” all different.

This is why performance medicine is a specialty โ€” and why I dedicated my career to it. Your instrument deserves a specialist. ๐ŸŽญ

It can be intimidating to talk about your injuries. For many it can be even difficult to admit that you are injured. And many times, the dance world doesnโ€™t give us the space, the comfort to come up short and still be accepted.

Letโ€™s continue the conversation about ankle swelling reduction. In our last post we spoke about the the new guidelines of PEACE, now letโ€™s take a look at LOVE

The goal here is to give you a birdโ€™s eye view of your rehab process instead of focusing on just the initial symptoms. Many people do think that once the initial pain and swelling is resolved, that things should return to normal. Yes there is more work to do! - take a look at what comes next

After the acute phase - a few days after your injury , LOVE comes next.

Goal: Emphasize active recovery using movement and exercises.
