Meet Robert Suttle: A Thriving HIV Long-Term Survivor❤️

As a long-term survivor, I am still here: with memory, purpose, and responsibility. This means honoring those who are no longer with us while actively resisting the forces of stigma, grief, and criminalization that threaten the lives and future of the HIV community. Beyond a medical status, my survival is defined by courage, faith, and a commitment to transforming personal experience into leadership that serves others. To me, long-term survival is a witness to our endurance and achievements. It is also a call to action, reminding us of our shared responsibilities.

Meet Richard Atkins: A Thriving HIV Long-Term Survivor❤️

"If I could go back 30 years and speak to my 5-year-old self, I would give him a hug and tell him, “You’re strong enough for what lies ahead.” A therapist will explain what HIV is, but the world will show you what it means.

You will meet people who are afraid of your existence. You will mourn friends whose lives end far too soon. You will become so afraid of others discovering your status that you retreat into a cocoon.!`But from that cocoon, you will evolve into a hero. A hero who smiles, uplifts others, and still finds joy in the world.

You will find a community that loves and accepts you, and you will make it your mission to build that same sense of community for others. Eventually, you will stop fearing what others think of you, because they will be listening to what you think. I won’t tell you the journey will be easy. I’m telling you that you will turn out just fine."

Some voices carry the weight of history — and the fire to change it. 🔥 Phill Wilson is one of them.

A long-term survivor, lifelong activist, and beloved community elder, Phill dedicated his career as Executive Director of the Black AIDS Institute to fighting for equity, justice, and the lives of Black communities impacted by HIV/AIDS.

Yesterday, he brought that same passion and purpose to our National Advocacy Roundtable, helping set the tone for today’s HIV Long Term Survivor Day commemoration. We are grateful. We are inspired. (Video credit: AmFAR)

HIV Long-Term Survivors' Awareness Day calls us to honor the profound weight of what it means to have lived through decades of this epidemic, while also asking: what does thriving as a “whole person” look like now? This week, we shared stories, resources, and partner highlights to uplift long‑term survivors—especially those who lived with HIV before effective treatment existed.

Your courage shaped this movement. Your lived experience continues to guide our work. Your strength inspires our commitment to Whole Person Health.

As we recognize 45 years of the HIV movement under the theme “United and Unbreakable: The HIV Movement at 45,” we also celebrate 30 years of USCHA, a convening built by and for community.

We see you. We honor you. We walk with you.

Today we proudly hosted a landmark National Advocacy Roundtable in partnership with the Congressional HIV Caucus, Equality Caucus, and the Democratic Task Force for Aging and Families.

This powerful gathering marked two major milestones
- The 45th anniversary of the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report that first identified what we now know as AIDS
- HIV Long‑Term Survivors Awareness Day on June 5.

The roundtable brought together former Directors of the White House Office of National AIDS Policy, members of the HIV Business Coalition, Members of Congress and their staff, HIV leaders, and—most importantly—constituents living with HIV who shared their lived experiences.

Together, we explored bold, meaningful strategies to end the HIV epidemic and strengthen the path forward. Today was a moment to honor how far we’ve come—and to recommit to the work still ahead.

Meet Myra Franks: A Thriving HIV Long-Term Survivor❤️

"Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would still be here. My journey began in a very dark place. The transformation was not simple—it was frightening, painful, and often lonely. I lived in silence and fear while hearing stories about others whose lives were cut short by HIV, whether through stigma, fear, or death itself.

To me, becoming a long-term survivor started the moment I heard the words, “You’ve tested positive for HIV.” In that instant, I became a survivor. Twenty-five years later, I can honestly say my diagnosis saved my life in more ways than one. Today, I am no longer just surviving—I am thriving."
