Microplastics are showing up in more places than just our environment. They’ve now been detected in human tissues, raising an important question: what could chronic exposure mean for metabolic and cardiovascular health?
Microplastics and nanoplastics can enter the body primarily through ingestion and inhalation. Research is still evolving, but human studies have found associations between exposure and markers of inflammation, oxidative stress, and endocrine disruption.
One particularly notable study found micro- and nanoplastics within carotid artery plaque. Among patients undergoing carotid surgery, those whose plaques contained these particles had a higher rate of heart attack, stroke, or death during follow-up. Importantly, this was an observational study, so it does not prove that microplastics caused those outcomes.
For those of us focused on obesity, cardiometabolic disease, and longevity, this is an emerging area worth watching.
What we know so far:
• Human exposure is widespread.
• Microplastics have been detected in human tissues.
• Inflammation and oxidative stress are among the biological pathways being investigated.
• Early human research suggests possible cardiovascular and metabolic implications.
• We do not yet have enough evidence to establish causation or recommend specific “detox” protocols.
