It started, like most good stories do, with two people who had no idea what they were walking into.

They landed in Kenya with the usual mix of excitement and quiet panic, the kind that hits somewhere over the Atlantic when you realize the textbook chapters are about to become real life. By the time they reached CPGH, that panic had turned into something else — nervous laughter, mostly, standing in a hallway outside the nursing station in scrubs that clearly belonged to someone else first, boots two sizes too big, waiting for whatever came next.

What came next was a shift neither of them expected to be ready for. Ten minutes after this photo was taken, one of them was standing beside a surgeon, handing over instruments mid-procedure, hands steadier than she felt. The other found her place at the nursing station, learning the rhythm of a ward that ran on routines she was only just beginning to understand.

Nobody tells you that the hardest part isn't the shift itself — it's the ten minutes before it, in a hallway, wondering if you're actually cut out for this. They were. They just didn't know it yet.

That's usually how it goes. You don't feel ready. You show up anyway. And somewhere between the ill-fitting boots and the open theatre door, you become someone a little different than who you were on the flight over.

There's a version of childbirth most Western-trained students never see: one where the midwife carries a mother from her first prenatal visit through delivery and the twenty-eight days after, with far fewer machines and far more instinct. That's the world this elective opens up.

Placed inside the OB/GYN departments of East Africa's busiest hospitals, students work hands-on through antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care — deliveries, newborn assessments, postpartum follow-up,under the direct mentorship of local midwives. Every placement is customized to individual school requirements, and split placements let students experience care across two hospitals, cities, or even countries in a single elective. Biweekly global health tutorials add space to unpack what's different, and why.

The impact tends to stick. One McMaster University midwifery student called her time in Tanzania eye-opening and formative — she left with a new respect for the strength of women and real confidence in her own hands.

The mornings had been spent in wards and clinics, learning what a stethoscope sounds like against a real chest, not a mannequin.

But the visit to the rescue centers stays with them.

The quiet didn't last long. A boy burst into laughter. A little girl reached for a student's hand and decided she wasn't letting go.

That afternoon, there were no charts or procedures. Just students sitting together, playing cards, sharing rice, flour, blankets and shoes. Simple things, but things that mattered.

No rotation prepares you for a child asking, "Are you coming back?" There's no lecture for that. You simply stay.

Years from now, they may forget some of the procedures they observed. But they'll remember the laughter, the giving, and the little hands that wouldn't let go.

Sometimes, the lessons that stay with you happen beyond the hospital walls.

Two days ago, Lara was somewhere else entirely. Today, she's standing outside the Labour Ward at CGH in scrubs, and by tonight she'll have already seen more of maternity care than most people see in a year.

This afternoon was a local area orientation, getting her bearings outside the hospital walls. Tomorrow, Dr. Amal walks her through the hospital itself.

In two weeks, "the labour and delivery department" will stop being three words on a schedule and start being a place she actually knows the sounds of it, the rhythm of it, the way a busy maternity ward moves when things are calm and the way it moves when they're not.

She's only just arrived. Ask her again in fourteen days what she learned, and the answer will be a very different, much longer story.

Before you finish packing the scrubs, … let’s talk paperwork!

If you’re prepping for your medical elective in Kenya, trust us—getting the admin sorted early makes stepping off the plane feel so much better.

Here are the big pre-departure essentials to tick off before you pack that carry-on:
- Get your Kenyan eTA sorted early – Don't leave it to the week of your flight. Give yourself at least a 2-week buffer to get it approved stress-free.
- Give your passport a quick check – You’ll need at least 6 months of validity left and at least one blank page.
- Keep your essentials handy – Save your elective placement confirmation, itinerary, and approved eTA right on your phone (and toss a printed copy in your bag just in case).
- Double-check before you fly – Entry guidelines can shift, so a quick final check before heading to the terminal never hurts!

Once the logistics are off your mind, you can focus on what you actually came to do: learning, scrubbing in, meeting incredible mentors, and taking in the beauty of Kenya.

Mid-morning, and the ward is quiet except for the shuffle of paper. Two students lean over a patient file, one pointing, one listening, piecing together a chart written in someone else's handwriting. No textbook quite prepares you for deciphering a doctor's handwriting, but there they are, figuring it out together, one word at a time.

This is what a normal day looks like for Elective Africa's pre-PA students in Kenya. Not lecture halls, but hospital rooms. Not hypothetical case studies, but real patients, real doctors, and real questions answered on the spot.

And somewhere between the rounds and the charts, something else happens. Students from opposite ends of the world start comparing notes. How healthcare looks back home. What's different here. What isn't. Different systems, different resources, the same curiosity pulling them all in the same direction. Some of these friendships outlast the placement by years, long after everyone's handwriting has gone back to being unreadable in their own language.
