There's a version of childbirth most Western-trained students never see: one where the midwife carries a mother from her first prenatal visit through delivery and the twenty-eight days after, with far fewer machines and far more instinct. That's the world this elective opens up.
Placed inside the OB/GYN departments of East Africa's busiest hospitals, students work hands-on through antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care โ deliveries, newborn assessments, postpartum follow-up,under the direct mentorship of local midwives. Every placement is customized to individual school requirements, and split placements let students experience care across two hospitals, cities, or even countries in a single elective. Biweekly global health tutorials add space to unpack what's different, and why.
The impact tends to stick. One McMaster University midwifery student called her time in Tanzania eye-opening and formative โ she left with a new respect for the strength of women and real confidence in her own hands.
Placements run in Mombasa, Malindi, Migori, Nairobi, and Kisumu (Kenya), plus Arusha and Moshi (Tanzania). A $350 deposit sets mentorship, housing, and pre-departure planning in motion.
