Congratulations to Award winner Tara Gibson, RN!

When one of our patients arrived for brain tumor surgery, Tara stood out as the bright light he and his family needed.

She connected with her patient through a shared love of Virginia Tech football, turning on the Hokies game after surgery and even updating his whiteboard with a to-do list: "Kick OR's Butt and Hokies Win." But beyond that, Tara provided exceptional care—anticipating needs, explaining every step of the recovery process, advocating for her patient, and easing his family's fears during an incredibly difficult time.

"It’s difficult to put into words how much my family appreciates Tara,” her nomination read. “She made one of the scariest weekends of our lives a little bit easier. We would choose her a million times over."

Thank you, Tara, for the compassion, expertise, and human connection you bring to every patient and family.

The next time you're hungry, you may want to think twice before grabbing ultra-processed snacks like chips or cookies. 🍪

According to Dr. Allen Taylor, our chairman of Cardiology, they may be convenient, but they also can take a toll on your blood pressure.

So, what's a better choice? Dr. Taylor recently explained to PARADE Magazine why pistachios deserve a spot on your pantry shelf. The crunchy, savory nut just might be the satisfying and heart-smart swap you need.

In surgical oncology, the critical window of time between diagnosis and the start of treatment can close quickly, especially for aggressive or complex digestive cancers. While the national average time to treatment is nearly 30 days, we are working to reduce that by 30%.

Speed and quality shouldn’t be opposites. In fact, both are vital part of quality cancer care. Learn from Dr. Mihir M. Shah why “treatment yesterday” is always better than “treatment tomorrow.”

Learn why MedStar Health is reducing the time from digestive cancer diagnosis to treatment.
