What if the problem isn’t that couples don’t know how to communicate… but that they can’t access those skills when they’re activated?

That’s where the real work begins.

In this free Introduction to Imago webinar, we’ll explore how to help couples move from defensiveness, shutdown, and conflict into greater safety, connection, and understanding.

If you’re a therapist, graduate student, or professional working with couples, this is a chance to experience the Imago lens and see how it can change the way you understand what’s happening in the room.

Join me, Dr. Caroline Bernhardt-Lanier for a warm, practical Introduction to Imago for Therapists and Graduate Students.

You’ll explore what makes the Imago relational paradigm different, watch part of an Imago session, and experience a taste of the Imago Dialogue in action.

For therapists doing couples work, holding the space between two activated nervous systems is some of the most demanding work we do.

And we’re not meant to hold it alone.

Supervision offers a place to slow down, think together, and receive support as you navigate the complexity of the work.

My monthly Imago Supervision Group returns September–December. A space to bring your cases, your questions, the moments that leave you stuck, and your own experience of sitting in the room with couples.

Come deepen your practice, strengthen your Imago lens, and be supported by others who understand the work.

You don’t have to figure it all out by yourself.

A reframe I keep coming back to with therapists:

There are no resistant couples: only moments where safety and attunement aren’t sufficient yet.

When a couple shuts down or becomes defensive, it’s easy to see resistance.

But often, it’s protection.

That shift changes the question from “Why won’t they engage?” to “What doesn’t feel safe enough yet?”

This idea runs through my Rethinking Couples Therapy series. Videos 1 & 2 are available now.

And if you’re curious about bringing this lens into your own work, join me for a free Introduction to Imago for Professionals on September 26, 12–1:30 pm ET.

Come experience the approach and see what it could open up in your work with couples.

Couples rarely come to therapy because they need more information about communication.

Most already know they “should listen better.”

The harder part is listening when you’re activated, sitting across from the person you love, hearing the exact thing that makes your whole system want to defend, explain, shut down, or disappear.

That’s where the real work begins.

The Imago Dialogue isn’t simply a communication technique. Underneath the structure, couples are practicing something much deeper:

Regulation. Empathy. Presence. Relational responsibility.

They’re learning how to stay connected to themselves while becoming genuinely curious about the world of the person sitting across from them.

In my latest Calabash training video, Structure as a Pathway to Connection, I unpack what the Dialogue is really building and why structure can create the safety that connection needs.

For those of us who work with couples, this is where it gets exciting.

Video 2 of my training series for couples therapists is live: Structure as a Pathway to Connection.

In Video 1, we explored Imago as a relational paradigm, a way of seeing couples. This video takes the next step: how do we actually work with the relationship in the room, not just the two individuals sitting in front of us?

I anchor it in four images that have shaped my own practice: the container, the bridge, the infinity loop, and the field. Each one offers a different way to hold what’s happening between partners.

If you’ve ever felt caught between honoring structure and staying attuned to the couple, this one’s for you.

Link in comments. I’d love to hear which of the four images resonates most with your work. 💬

You became a therapist to help people heal.

But if you’ve ever left a couples session feeling like you were carrying the relationship on your shoulders, you’re not alone.

Couples therapy asks something different of us. It requires more than insight, it requires a framework that helps us create safety, guide connection, and remain grounded when emotions run high.

That’s exactly what you’ll begin learning in Module 1 of Imago Clinical Training with me, Caroline Bernhardt-Lanier.

✔ Learn practical skills you can immediately apply with couples
✔ Earn 32 APA CE Credits

Most therapists don’t struggle with couples because they’re not skilled enough.

They struggle because nobody taught them what to do when two hurting people are sitting in front of them at the same time.

When one partner is criticizing.
When the other is shutting down.
When both are talking but neither feels heard.

That’s often the moment therapists start questioning themselves.

“Am I helping?”

“Should I intervene?”

“How do I stop this conversation from going in circles?”

“Why do I feel like a referee instead of a therapist?”

Module 1 of Imago Clinical Training was designed to answer those questions.

Not with more theory.

With practical skills you can use immediately.

Inside Module 1, you’ll learn how to:

✓ Create safety in the room
✓ Slow couples down when emotions escalate
✓ Facilitate mirroring, validation, and empathy
✓ Guide partners through productive dialogue
✓ Stay out of the content and lead the process
✓ Help couples move from reactivity to connection

Confidence in couples therapy doesn’t come from having all the answers.

It comes from having a clear framework when the room gets difficult.

Start with Module 1.

Learn the skills.
Apply them with your clients.
Then decide if you’re ready for the next step.
