In Loving Memory of Samuel A. Bens
Samuel A. Bens was born on October 30, 1960, at Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington, D.C., to his loving parents, Sara Lee Battle Bens and Samuel “Pop” Bens. He was the fifth of six children, joining his siblings Yvette, Michelle, Joel, Sandra, and Jerry in a home filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Sam enjoyed a childhood full of adventure. He spent his early years exploring the neighborhoods of Washington, D.C. with friends, bowling, riding bicycles, and participating in a variety of sports. He proudly graduated from Spingarn High School, where he was a member of the football team and a proud Greenwave. He continued his education at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), where he was a four-year starting football player and proudly represented the Firebirds. Sam later served his country in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge.
Throughout his life, Sam possessed a genuine thirst for knowledge and embraced a variety of career opportunities. His professional experience included printing, landscaping, and sales before he found his longtime career with Amtrak. Serving in Zone 5 (Off-Corridor – South) and Zone 2 (On-Corridor – North), Sam worked as a conductor for many years. Through his professionalism, kindness, and welcoming spirit, he touched the lives of countless coworkers and passengers alike.
Sam had many interests that reflected both his curious mind and competitive spirit. He was an accomplished chess player who appreciated the strategy, discipline, and challenge the game provided. Above all, reading was one of his greatest passions. Books brought him knowledge, joy, peace, and lifelong learning, and he never lost his appreciation for the written word.
In the evenings, Sam enjoyed unwinding with his favorite game show, Jeopardy!, and cheering on his favorite Washington sports teams, including the Commanders, Nationals, Capitals, Mystics, and Wizards. He was also an avid fan of both men’s and women’s college football and basketball. One of his favorite weekly traditions was bowling in a league alongside his beloved brother, Jerry.
Samuel A. Bens passed away on July 9, 2026, at the age of 65.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sara Lee Battle Bens and Samuel “Pop” Bens, and by his beloved brother, Jerry.
He leaves to cherish his memory his siblings: Yvette Battle, Michelle Battle, Joel Bens, and Sandra Bennett. He also leaves behind his beloved nieces, Kia, Joelle, Brianna, Brittini, and Danielle; his nephew, Justinn; his great-nieces, Claudia, Jaziah, Brielle, and June; his great-nephews, Jazeel (JT), Tamon (TJ), Avery, Matthew, Deion, and Kofaye; his special friend, Dorothy; and a host of other loving relatives and dear friends.
Sam will be remembered for his kindness, intellect, love of learning, competitive spirit, and the genuine connections he built throughout his life. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
Military funeral honors and committal services for Samuel A. Bens will be held on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at the National Memorial Cemetery at Quantico, 18424 Joplin Road, Triangle, VA 22172.
