Our mission is to end poverty. How do we do that?

By helping families gain sustainable access to the 5 Fundamentals — the building blocks of a healthy, prosperous life:

🏠 A safe place to live.
🥑 Nourishing food.
🏥 Access to healthcare.
📖 Opportunities to learn new skills and knowledge.
💵 A reliable source of income.

When a family is missing even one of these, their foundation begins to crumble.

Join us to build something new together: a world free of poverty.

Congratulations to Dr. Alice Mudekereza, who was recently honored with the 2026 Humanitarian Award at the InterAction Forum! 🏆🎉

Due to Ebola-related travel restrictions in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Dr. Mudekereza was unable to attend the event in Washington, DC. Instead, she provided this video as her acceptance speech. We had to share it, because she is a role model for everyone who works to make the world a better place.

ABOUT DR. MUDEKEREZA

Dr. Mudekereza has served as the chief of party for several of Corus organization IMA World Health’s programs in the DRC for the past decade.

Amid volcano eruptions, ongoing violence and rebel assaults, funding challenges, and mpox and Ebola outbreaks, Dr. Mudekereza has worked tirelessly to advance programs that protect and empower women.

For example, as the head of a counseling program, she has reached tens of thousands of survivors of sexual violence. She also launched a program to procure and distribute PEP kits to health facilities to prevent the spread of HIV to survivors of r**e. Under her leadership, this effort has provided lifesaving therapy to hundreds of thousands of women across more than two-thirds of the country.

Corus International is deeply grateful for Dr. Mudekereza’s passion, expertise and determination — and we are proud of her receipt of the 2026 Humanitarian Award.

Thank you, Dr. Mudekereza, for your incredible leadership and impact.

What if health systems could get a warning before a health emergency strikes?

That’s the idea behind a new five-year effort to strengthen climate-resilient health systems in Nepal. The program is backed by a $6.4 million grant from Takeda as part of their CSR program.

Corus has developed an approach that connects local climate and health data with disease surveillance and emergency response systems.

Here’s what that can mean for communities:
- Earlier warning: Climate and health data can help identify risks, such as potential cholera outbreaks, before they spread.
- More time to act: Health facilities, local governments and communities can prepare sooner to protect people and prevent disease from spreading.
- Stronger health facilities: Health facilities can strengthen infrastructure and preparedness so they can keep providing care during floods, heatwaves and other emergencies.

The need is urgent. Recent devastating floods in Nepal showed how quickly climate-related hazards can become health and humanitarian emergencies.

This work will strengthen 70 health facilities and help provide more than 150,000 people with stronger protection from climate-related health threats.

And the learning can go beyond Nepal. What we learn through this work can help inform how similar approaches are used to protect communities facing climate-related health risks around the world.

☕ A story to reflect on over coffee, on International Coffee Day:

Bessy Cabrera Vasquez was born and raised in the Marcala region of Honduras — an area known for its coffee. As a girl, Bessy fell in love with plants and flowers while helping her father on the farm. She even dreamed of going to college to become an agricultural engineer.

But education was a luxury her family could not afford.

Bessy turned her energy to other dreams — raising a family and managing her own small coffee plot. Like her father, she sells seedlings that she raises in a small nursery, and she teaches her son the basics of farming.

Today, her biggest dream is to provide a better life for her son, especially the medical care he needs and the opportunity to go to college, if he wants.

Through Corus, our amazing partners and our compassionate donors, Bessy is learning how to manage her farm in ways that increase the quality and output of her coffee, enrich her soil and support her family’s income and well-being.

Because coffee is more than just a daily ritual — it’s the Vasquez family’s 5 Fundamentals (income, place, nutrition, knowledge and health) in a cup.

Bessy is a participant in the “Opportunities for Circular and Inclusive Diversification in Agriculture” (OCIDA) project in the Dry Corridor of Honduras, funded by Global Affairs Canada

It’s National Coffee Day!☕ If you're drinking coffee today, you're in good company: more than 2 billion cups are enjoyed around the world every day.

But behind every cup is a farmer — and the math isn’t fair.

Coffee is a $118 billion business in the U.S. alone. Yet most of the 12.5 million farmers who grow it see just 10% of what it sells for. Nearly HALF live in poverty.

Since 1988, Corus organizations have proudly walked alongside our coffee-growing neighbors in Uganda, Honduras, Peru, Indonesia and beyond — helping them grow stronger crops, protect the health of their soil, earn fair prices, and build brighter futures for their families.

Because coffee farming influences all 5 Fundamentals that a family needs to thrive: a stable income, a healthy environment, the ability to learn new skills and educate their children, nourishing food and the ability to access health care.

Powered by your compassion, Corus is working day and night to provide relief to families affected by the massive landslide and flash flood on August 26.

Dr. Hira Dhar Chudali, senior program manager, reports from our office in Nepal. On September 4, our hardworking team assembled and distributed hygiene supplies and clothing for 500 families who lost their homes in the hard-hit Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts.

Hygiene supplies include soap, towels, toothbrushes and toothpaste, combs, a clothesline and clothespins, menstrual supplies, a flashlight and more.

Corus is coordinating closely with local government officials to ensure that the emergency supplies we provide align with the broader relief effort — and that they reach the families who need them most.

This response will develop as we learn more and the needs evolve.

Thank you, as ever, for loving your neighbors in Nepal and around the world! (You can join this response at the link in the comments.)

We’ve all seen the terrible footage of last week’s flood disaster in Nepal.

Sarku Maya Tamang experienced it firsthand, and now she’s living in the aftermath.

When she heard the flood was crashing down the river toward her home, she packed up her family’s important papers, some clothes and her mangalasutra — her beloved wedding necklace. Then she grabbed her children and fled to her sister’s house, leaving the family farm behind to whatever fate the rushing water would decide.

Thousands of families in Nepal are in Sarku’s shoes today — mourning the loss of loved ones, homes and livelihoods. They are displaced, and the future is uncertain.

Through Corus, your compassion is on the ground, meeting urgent needs in the hard-hit Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts. We are distributing hygiene supplies and clothing, and we are sourcing heavy-duty winterized tents that can protect displaced families from freezing temperatures, rain, snow and high winds as cooler seasons approach.

As always, we are coordinating with local authorities to ensure we are contributing the most helpful supplies and ensuring assistance reaches people who need it most.

Thank you for caring for your neighbors in Nepal and beyond! (Add your support at the link in the comments.)

“The demand is huge. But resources are limited.” — Narayan Gyawali, Corus International Nepal Program Director

Narayan is seeing the devastation in Nepal firsthand. Entire communities have lost homes and access to food and clean water. Damaged roads and infrastructure are making it difficult to reach people who need help.

And the need is immense.

In an interview with CNN, Narayan shared what his team is seeing on the ground and how Corus is working with local communities and authorities to get emergency assistance where it is needed most.

You can help. Your gift can provide critical support to families affected by this disaster.
