Today, with Association for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation and the rest of the transplantation community, we recognize Juneteenth.

Also known as "Freedom Day", Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States.

While we celebrate freedom for Black people in our nation, it is also important that we reflect on the uncomfortable history of this country, and continue the work of making a "more perfect union" for everyone.

Tonight we're taking over the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum for a VERY "Indy" night at the racetrack!

To open the first general session of , we heard touching testimonials from cornea recipient Jessica Moore and Donor Mother, Jenn McBride.

Jessica suffered a severe fungal infection from sleeping with her contacts in after a weekend of yard work, leading to three corneal transplants. Her gratitude for her doctors, donors, and their families is palpable, and she helps spread awareness about donor registration and ocular care.

Jenn's daughter Grace is a donor hero after passing in a tragic car accident. Deep in grief, Jenn explained how finding out that Grace's cornea donation restored the sight of two individuals is what pulled her out of despair.

We appreciate both these women for being willing to share their emotional journeys - reminding us all how valuable the daily work of eye banking is.

Thank you to VisionFirst - Indiana Lions Eye Bank, our host eye bank, for connecting us with Jessica and Jenn and facilitating their speeches today.
