🧠💜 Alzheimer’s doesn’t see color or speak a language. But getting a diagnosis and care does.

In her newly published Real Clear Health op-ed, “Tackling Alzheimer’s Starts with a Focus on Latinos,” AlzInColor supporting partner Dr. Elena Rios, President of the National Hispanic Health Foundation (NHHF), shares her family’s experience with Alzheimer’s and the challenges Latino communities face in accessing early detection, culturally responsive care, and caregiver support.

She also highlights the importance of Alzheimer’s education, healthcare workforce diversity, and the ASAP and AADAPT Acts to improve screening access and provider training.

💜 Brain health matters at every age and knowing when to seek answers can make a difference.

In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, AlzInColor partnered with the Organization for Latino Health Advocacy (OLHA) for a special Spanish-language webinar, “Brain Health in Our Communities: From Early Conversations to Early Detection & Access.”

Moderated by Sabrina Lopez (OLHA), the conversation featured Dr. Gabriel de Erausquin and Dr. María P. Aranda, who shared valuable insights on healthy lifestyle practices, early detection, caregiver support, and the importance of culturally responsive Alzheimer's care in Latino communities.

Three key takeaways from the conversation:

🧠 Seek Answers Early
Dr. de Erausquin emphasized we should not automatically dismiss changes in memory, thinking, or behavior as normal aging. The bipartisan ASAP Act also seeks to expand access to early Alzheimer's screening through Medicare.

❤️ Care for the Caregiver
Dr. Aranda reminded us that dementia affects the entire family. Sharing responsibilities, taking breaks, and seeking support can help protect caregivers' well-being. No one should have to navigate caregiving alone.

🌎 Language, Culture, and Representation Matter
Memory evaluations should reflect a person's language, culture, and education. Dr. Aranda also emphasized the importance of greater Latino participation in Alzheimer's research to help ensure future treatments and care reflect our communities' needs.

As Dr. Elena Rios, President of the National Hispanic Health Foundation, puts it, “Your brain has to be activated to keep working.”

Reading, doing puzzles, continuing to learn, and engaging with others are all ways to keep the brain active. Dr. Rios especially emphasizes the importance of social connection, encouraging people of all ages to make time for meaningful, face-to-face interaction rather than relying solely on screens and technology.
