Gut health is everywhere right now.

From probiotic sodas and supplements to microbiome tests and foods marketed as "gut-friendly," consumers are being flooded with products claiming to improve their health. But how much of the excitement is supported by science?

Researchers are uncovering fascinating connections between diet, the gut microbiome, and inflammation. At the same time, an important question remains: Is the commercial market moving faster than the evidence?

At the International Conference on Nutrition in Medicine (ICNM), Christopher Gardner, PhD, will explore what we actually know about the microbiome, what remains uncertain, and the evidence-based dietary strategies that may support gut health.

Join physicians, dietitians, researchers, students, and other health professionals from around the world as they examine the latest science on nutrition and chronic disease, and what it could mean for the future of patient care.

Bill Gates, genetically modified ticks, and meat allergies.

A conspiracy theory has been making the rounds online.

The attention-grabbing, but false, claims suggest Bill Gates is somehow connected to a rise in alpha-gal syndrome, a condition linked to tick bites that can trigger allergic reactions to alpha-gal-containing foods, like red meat.

There is no evidence to support those claims. But the conversation has drawn attention to something very real: alpha-gal syndrome.

The condition is associated with bites from lone star ticks and can cause symptoms ranging from hives and digestive distress to severe allergic reactions in some cases.

If you think you may have alpha-gal syndrome, talk with your healthcare provider or an allergist. They can evaluate your symptoms and may order a blood test that measures alpha-gal IgE antibodies to help make the diagnosis.

The CDC estimates that hundreds of thousands of Americans may have been affected by alpha-gal syndrome, though many cases may go undiagnosed.

Researchers are also monitoring how climate change and other environmental factors may be contributing to the spread of ticks, increasing exposure risk in some regions.

For people who need to avoid animal products, know that plant-based foods such as beans, lentils, tofu, tempeh, nuts, seeds, and whole grains can provide more than enough protein and other important nutrients.

Want to learn more? One of the scientists who helped uncover alpha-gal syndrome, Dr. Thomas Platts-Mills, will be speaking about the condition at this year’s International Conference on Nutrition in Medicine. Hear from him and many more experts in Washington, D.C., August 13-15.

Interested in eating more plant-based after a new alpha-gal diagnosis or for other health, environmental, and/or ethical reasons?

“I'm both using my voice here and my money to say this is incredibly important,” the billionaire told USA TODAY.

Menopause is receiving much-deserved attention after Melinda French Gates announced a $215 million investment aimed at improving research, provider training, and access to care for midlife women.

“We ought to be pouring a lot more money into this area so that women can thrive and so that they can step into their full power,” according to Frech Gates.

She described women’s health as an area of health care that has long been underfunded and overlooked.

Many women report struggling to find answers regarding menopause, navigating symptoms for years before receiving appropriate support.

According to USA TODAY reporting, “the investment begins with $10 million to the Menopause Society to train providers from gynecologists to family physicians.”

We agree that women deserve better information and better care. That includes greater awareness of evidence-based lifestyle approaches that may help manage common symptoms.

For example, research suggests that dietary patterns may play a role in menopause symptom management, including hot flashes. Yet a recent poll found that only 43% of women believe diet can influence hot flash symptoms.

Interested in learning more about what you can do to help navigate menopause? We’ve put together a fact sheet with practical guidance, nutrition information, and recipes.

Drug development is at a turning point. The FDA has issued draft guidance on the use of new approach methodologies, or NAMs, in drug development, marking another step in its roadmap to reduce animal testing. The Physicians Committee has submitted public comments calling for revisions that keep human relevance at the center of the process and ensure promising human-centric methods are not delayed by overly rigid validation requirements.

Read what we recommended and why it matters for the future of drug safety testing.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is updating its strategic plan for the next five years, and the Physicians Committee is making sure human-based research is at the center of it. We submitted key recommendations urging the NIH to increase training in nonanimal research approaches, shift infrastructure funding away from animal facilities, strengthen oversight of animal use justifications, and publicly report on how many animals are used in federally funded research each year.

The decisions made in this plan will shape medical research across the U.S. for years to come. We are not letting that opportunity pass.
