OSHA's Safe & Sound Week takes place August 10–16, 2026 — a nationwide recognition of workplace health and safety programs that prioritize management leadership, worker participation and hazard identification.

This year's observance connects directly to ACPM's legacy in occupational health. In the late 1950s, ACPM physicians were already pressing corporations to see worker health and productivity as inseparable. At the 1959 National Health Forum in Chicago, ACPM leaders Dr. James Sterner, Colonel Louis Kossuth and Dr. V.A. Van Volkenburgh shaped conversations that would influence workplace safety policy for decades to come.

When Congress created OSHA in 1970, workplace hazards — from toxic exposures to preventable injuries — were officially recognized as public health concerns. ACPM members contributed their expertise then, and continue to do so today through advocacy, training and evidence-based policy development.

True workplace protection means safeguarding both body and mind. As we mark Safe & Sound Week, ACPM remains committed to advancing prevention on the job and supporting the physicians who make it possible.

"Preventive Medicine physicians are exactly the kind of leaders we need at the forefront of our health and public health infrastructure. We wish Dr. Schwartz well and look forward to working with her to prevent the onset of chronic and infectious disease and promote wellness throughout the nation." — ACPM President Dr. Jill Waalen.

ACPM congratulates RADM Erica Schwartz on her Senate confirmation as the 21st Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention! Dr. Schwartz is board-certified in Preventive Medicine — the only ABMS-recognized specialty that provides physicians with expertise in both individual and population health.
