What if part of the barrier to becoming the version of you that you dream of is holding yourself to expectations and standards that are not only outdated, but were never possible to begin with.

Becoming this version of you may involve letting go of lines of questioning that never served us to begin with:

Am I doing this right?
Do I seem desirable?
Am I normal?
Is my partner satisfied?
Should I want this?
Why isn’t this working?

These questions aren’t bad or wrong, but they probably won’t lead you to feeling peace, confidence and self-assuredness.

This week, choose one of these frames and work towards shifting how you approach yourself into a place with more compassion, care and curiosity.

Growth gets sold to us as immediate and constant.

We want things fast and permanent (hello, GLP-1s and hack culture).

But inner growth is more gradual and subtle than what many of us would prefer. It’s uncomfortable to put in effort and not know if change is happening, when it’ll start impacting you, and when will it be done? I get this last question a lot from clients.

But if we measure our own growth against a myth that it can and should happen over night, that it will be painless, and that it will be irreversible, then we are bound to feel like we’re failing.

And honestly, who wants to keep working for change when you feel like you’re failing at it along the way.

It’s time to be more realistic about growth. Within that there’s freedom. Freedom to stomach the inevitable ups and downs without questioning your capabilities.

I love suggesting this to couples.

I’ve done it myself and it was remarkable to me how I could feel such anticipation, excitement, and nervousness (in a good way) for the “will we” or “won’t we”.

We got ready separately, arrived separately, sat at the bar and introduced ourselves, then proceeded to have a 3 hour first date. You could tell the bartender was rooting for us.

If you can really commit to the role of not knowing each other, while simultaneously showing up as an authentic version of yourself, you may be surprised by what feelings you can cultivate.

Your flirtation, desire, longing, anticipation, curiosity about your partner, and so many other experiences, all may remind you of parts of yourself that are still there but have just been quiet.

Have you tried this with your long-term partner? Let me know if you do!

If you’ve jumped to the assumption that something is wrong with you when your body/wants/needs change, welcome to the majority of us. It’s so easy to assume something is broken and then comes the anxiety.

As it relates to our desire, we should EXPECT desire to change. It does not stay stagnant. It does not stay the same.

Like you, it evolves.

So, are you asking yourself helpful questions when you notice an inevitable change? Are you working WITH your evolving body or against it?

You know that feeling when you deeply know something with every fiber of your being. Well, these are some things I wish I felt that level of clarity with when I was younger.

I’m not perfect now and still need reminding. But, believing these with my whole heart has been freeing.

What are some lessons you’re celebrating finally knowing with every fiber of your being?

“No one believed my pain.”

“I was too embarrassed to say anything.”

“What’s wrong with me?”

“I was afraid that he was going to leave me because of it so I just dealt with the pain in silence.”

“Will I ever be able to have kids?”

“Is this going to be what my life is like forever?”

These are very real sentiments that I have heard from my clients who deal with chronic pelvic pain and in particular vaginismus. It’s hard enough to get support for the physical pain, but the emotional pain also goes unseen.

Working with an experienced s3x therapist who deeply understands the struggle you’ve been experiencing can be a vital part of your healing journey.

There’s something powerful about realizing this:
You are not only the adult caring for your inner child…
You are also the younger version of the person you are still becoming.

The compassion you offer your younger self?
Your future self would want that same compassion for you, right now.

Healing isn’t only about looking backward. It’s also about learning to hold your present self with the same tenderness, patience, and understanding you hope to someday look back with.

You do not have to become perfect to deserve gentleness in the process.
