Does anyone have access to Roger Baudier's "The Catholic Church" (1939)? I am looking for the citation to a map drawn in 1780 of Washington, LA. The map is mentioned in this blog post by Gladys DeVilliers. I will request a copy from the Cabildo Archive, but really need the correct citation. Thanks!

I came across the names of several of these men today while researching the Opelousas Post records archived at LSU.

There is a reference to Michel Brignac, Mr. Lamirand, Francois Lemelle, as well as connected locations: Lamelle's Portage and Mrs. Donato's pasture!

A suspected murder is investigated and many of the papers are the interviews of witnesses who come to the commandant's office to give testimony. At first glance the victim nor the witnesses are connected to the 11 men of our study.

This link is to a finding aid that describes the documents available for study. For me, it connects these people to a particular place, time, and circle of friends, family, and neighbors.

The goal is to research all possible sources to ensure we don't find one of our 11 men where they would not be expected.

For example - all of the 11 must be dead before the church moved in 1798. Otherwise we would expect to find them in the "new" church Cemetery at St. Landry's.

On October 16th a new marker was dedicated at Le Vieux Village park commemorating the Opelousas Militia. Some of the men who served under Galvez, and died after 1798 are buried in the nearby St. Landry Catholic Cemetery. A number of descendants were in attendance - if you see yourself, tag yourself!
