On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress approved the design of a national flag. Other Presidents issued proclaimations throughout history to designate this day as National Flag Day but it wasn't until August 3, 1949, that Congress approved the national observance, and President Harry Truman signed it into law.

We understand the sacrifices that this flag represents and celebrate this symbol of freedom.
