Recovery Central

Recovery Central Upon the completion of this training (2019), Recovery Central received a grant from the Eli Lilly Endowment (through Center for Congregations).

As a ministry of Central Christian Church, Recovery Central is "promoting partnerships to help build a more effective recovery community and response to substance misuse." Recovery Central began in 2017 in Washington Indiana, and, in 2018, received extensive training in Mutual Ministry provided by the Center for Congregations (Indianapolis). Mutual Ministry can be summarized by the acronym "C.A.R.

": Collaborative (working with people as partners--not clients); Asset-based (making use of the wealth of experience, talent, time, energy, property and other resources); and Relational (a growing working trust between people who share a common mission).

Everybody has their own opinions on alcohol and drug addiction, but until you've been there, your opinion means nothing. Yes, they chose to abuse alcohol and drugs thinking they would be the one that would be able control it. You don't control addiction, it controls you. There are some lucky ones who have beat it, but don't think because they're still alive, that life is gravy. They fight everyday, all day to stay sober and clean. It's a constant battle from the time they open their eyes until they close them, and it never goes away. Most are good people who made a bad choice. Battling an addiction is a beast for the person addicted and the ones who love them. So, in loving memory of every family member and friend who has lost their battle with addiction, and those who continue to conquer it, put this on your page if you know someone who has or had an addiction. πŸ–€πŸ™πŸΌπŸ’œπŸ—£

So, yesterday was my first day back since my vacation. Needless to say, my crazy a** day started before I even got there yesterday. One of my Elders from the church called me on my way to work to ask me if I had spoken with Pastor John? To my HUGE disbelief he informed me that someone had gotten into our church overnight Saturday night and had stolen our 50" and 75" televisions, one which we use for service EVERY Sunday. To say they limped through Sunday service is an understatement but Pastor John managed as always. 😊 REALLY!! TO STEAL FROM A CHURCH ... REALLY, WOW!!! To steal itself is awful but to steal from a church is beyond low!!! I usually try to find a positive in all situations but this truly leaves me fuming!! I am soo saddened for my congregation. We're not a big congregation but we're strong and you stole from us all!!! My heart is extremely heavy from this. Thank you all for your time. Much love to you. For you who stole from us ... I will try my very best to pray for you but remember someday YOU WILL answer for this ...

Recovery Central was another partner who received over $30,000 to help with their substance abuse programming during the pandemic.

Here's one account of how the program was beneficial to her and others:

My name is Lorri Brookins and I am the administrative assistant for Central Christian Church and Recovery Central. I am writing this to tell everyone everything I have learned and gained due to the United Way Grant that Recovery Central received. I, as an almost 6 year recovering alcoholic, am very passionate about helping others and was honored that I was asked to be a part of the team working on the grant. I myself, was able to attend Recovery Coach University and became a peer recovery coach. I will be a certified peer recovery coach as soon as I take my exam. My recovery coach training was truly eye opening. I learned a newer, improved language that is much friendlier towards recoverees like myself. The biggest, most exciting thing that happened to me is that Recovery Central and Central Christian Church asked me to stay on as their part-time administrative assistant.

I truly thank United Way for giving me the opportunity to do all of the things I have been able to do to help improve our recovery community and reduce the stigma that surrounds substance and alcohol misuse disorders.
