Clara Barton was a volunteer first — long before she founded the American Red Cross.

Before bringing the movement to the United States, Clara served as a volunteer with the International Red Cross during the Franco‑Prussian War. She went into war zones alongside other volunteers, helping distribute relief supplies to families in Strasbourg whose lives had been upended by war and to people across France.

She also helped open workrooms so the people of Strasbourg could make new clothes and begin rebuilding their lives with dignity.

Clara’s service laid the foundation for an organization built on volunteerism — a mission powered, then and now, by people willing to show up in moments of crisis.

During National Volunteer Month, we honor Clara’s legacy and the volunteers who remain at the heart of our mission.
