Pain or limited at the depth of your squat?! Feeling pinching pressure in the back of your knee? Check out these techniques to help improve your squat!

📍Spanish Squat📍anchor band to rack and place behind your knees. Have tension on the band within the gap behind your knee as you squat. The band will help deload the knee, focus on quad strength, and improve knee flexion mobility💪🏻

📍Talus Mobilization with Band📍anchor a band to the rack, put the band right where your foot meets the lower leg. This is where the bone the Talus sits. This can become stiff and limit ankle dorsiflexion required for squats and in turn put more focus on the knee. Lunge with the band pulling while the knee translates forward. Feel the stretch and hold and enjoy 😏

📍Knee Gapping with Towel📍Roll hand towel up and place behind the knee in the crease. Flex knee and pull towel into the crease more as knee flexes. Feel free to grab your knee to overpressure flexion while towel gaps the knee to help improve joint space and tibiofemroal gliding for knee flexion.

Give these a whirl and try them out today to help improve your squat range and any pinching pain!

Feeling stiff in the low back after sitting in the office all day or relaxing at night? Give these three moves to get that low back moving again, where you can do anywhere! Including the office 🙌🏻.

The spine is meant to move in 3 planes of motion. Flex/extend, rotate left and right, and side bend left and right. After sitting for periods of time the low back can become stiff feeling and needs to move! The lumbar spine has primary motion and flexion and extension and little with rotation and side bending.. but we still need to move those motions!

1. Lumbar Rotations with knees bent
- Lay flat, needing your knees up, and keep your shoulders flat through the whole motion going side to side. Don’t let them pop off the ground or you’re gonna lose the stretch!

2. Cat/Cow
- Start in a table top position and try to push the ground away while arching your back and breathe out. Then let your low back fall back in while breathing in gently and mid back fall back in again too. Repeat.

3. Childs Pose with L/R Reaches
- begin in child’s pose (kneeling and sitting on your heels with arms flat out) and then reach as far as you can through whole spine to the left and take a breath. Then repeat to the right.

4. 💥BONUS💥 T-Spine move!: Thread the Needle
-begin similar to child’s pose, but make sure to sit on heels. Have hands flat reach under your armpit with left arm under right side and make sure not to come off your heels hold for a few seconds. Repeat the right side.

Perform 5 to 10 repetitions for 5 to 10 seconds each side. Should be feeling good, flexible, and ready to tackle the day!

Are you struggling to get full range of motion in depth in your back squat? 🏋🏼‍♂️It could be coming from your ankles!

If you’re like me, I’ve always had extremely stiff ankles and pronated (flat) feet, to the point during my doctorate program I was the example patient for covering the foot… 😖 you may need to mobilize your ankle or adjust your heel position!🫡

Try these two quick tips to help improve range of motion and improve your power and strength of the squat.

1. Heel lift support pad (5-10 # plate works too)-This elevates your heel and provides starting plantar flexion allowing for more range of dorsiflexion during the depth of your squat. 🏋🏼‍♂️

2. Talocrural Mobilization with Band- wrap band around post, in half kneel position, wrap other end around top foot where the lower leg meets the foot. Lunge knee forward and keep heel in contact with floor at all times. This will provide stretching pull of band on talus (bone in ankle that feels “jammy” in the front of the foot when not gliding properly) and help mobilize into natural motion needed for squat. Hold for 10-20 seconds perform 5-10 times. 🦶

Both these tricks help with ankle joint mobility! If it’s still bothering you, make an appointment today to get to the problem to optimize your squat!
