🧠 Bribery vs. Reinforcement: What’s the Difference?

🍪 BRIBERY
Bribery often happens after challenging behavior has already started and involves offering something to stop or change the behavior in the moment.
Example: “If you stop yelling, I’ll give you a cookie.”
⭐ REINFORCEMENT
Reinforcement is planned and intentional. A desired item, activity, attention, or other consequence is provided after a specific behavior, with the goal of increasing the likelihood that behavior will happen again.
Example: “First clean up your toys, then you can have your tablet.”
The key difference? Reinforcement teaches and strengthens skills; bribery is typically a reactive response to behavior.
In ABA, we focus on identifying what motivates each learner and using reinforcement thoughtfully to build communication, independence, and positive skills. 💙
✨ Remember: A reward isn’t automatically a bribe. Ask yourself: Was the consequence planned ahead of time to strengthen a specific behavior, or was it offered in response to challenging behavior to make it stop?
