This week we had the opportunity to attend the Nebraska State School Nurses Association Conference as a family.

While many people think summer break means vacations and pool days, for our family it also means trade show days. Some of our favorite memories are made loading equipment, setting up booths, meeting incredible people, and talking about ways to make our communities safer.

One of the things we’re most proud of is seeing our daughters take an interest in the family business. They understand that Talacko Safety Solutions isn’t just about selling equipment, it’s about helping save lives. Whether it’s an AED, a bleeding control kit, or emergency preparedness training, every conversation has the potential to impact a student, teacher, parent, or community member when seconds matter most.

School nurses are often the first line of care during a medical emergency, and we are grateful for the work they do every day to keep Nebraska’s students safe and healthy.

We’re building more than a company, we’re building a legacy of service, preparedness, and community. Watching our girls embrace that mission reminds us why we started this journey in the first place.

🚑 A Small Sticker with a Big Purpose

The Omaha Fire Department has begun proudly placing PulsePoint decals on our frontline apparatus, and it represents something much bigger than a sticker.

It represents community response.

When someone suffers sudden cardiac arrest, survival depends on two things:
❤️ Immediate CPR
⚡ Rapid access to an AED

The PulsePoint app alerts trained bystanders when a cardiac arrest is happening nearby so they can start CPR before first responders arrive. Those early minutes can mean the difference between life and death.

As firefighters and paramedics, we see firsthand how powerful it is when the public becomes part of the response system.

We lost a good man this week. God Bless!

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Captain John Olson, who courageously battled cancer.

Captain Olson dedicated more than two decades of service to the Omaha Fire Department and to the citizens of Omaha. He began his career on January 5, 2004, and was promoted to Captain in 2012. Throughout his time with OFD, he served in numerous assignments across the department, including Engine 23 and Special Operations, before most recently serving as a Fire Inspector in the Fire Prevention Division.

Captain Olson was known for his steady leadership, professionalism, and commitment to both his crew and our community. He mentored many, led with integrity, and earned the respect and friendship of all those who had the privilege to work alongside him.

In addition to his incredible contributions to our team and community, he will be remembered for the impact he had on the people around him. His presence in our stations and throughout our department will be deeply missed.

Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with his wife, children, extended family, friends, and all who knew and loved him during this incredibly difficult time.

Rest easy, John. You will be forever remembered and missed.

The following funeral arrangements have been made for Captain John Olson:

The visitation and funeral services will be held at St. Andrews United Methodist Church (15050 West Maple Road, Omaha, NE 68116).

Visitation: Tuesday, February 17, 5:00pm - 8:00pm

Funeral: Wednesday, February 18, 10:00am

Burial: Immediately following the funeral at Voss Mohr Cemetery (138th & Harrison)

Reception: Following the Burial at IAFF Local 385 Union Hall (6005 Grover Street, Omaha, NE 68106)

Procession Details:

The funeral procession will depart the church at approximately 1100 hours. The procession will travel east on West Maple Road to 144th Street, south on 144th Street to Harrison Street, and then east to Voss Mohr Cemetery, where Captain Olson will be laid to rest.

Members of the public and media are respectfully invited to line the designated route to honor Captain Olson and support his family. Out of respect for the family and for safety purposes, media are asked to remain outside the cemetery fence and clear of the entrance.

We would like to sincerely thank everyone for the overwhelming outpouring of love, prayers, and support you have shown Captain Olson’s family and our department during this incredibly difficult time. Your kindness, solidarity, and presence mean more than words can express as we honor Captain Olson’s life and service.
