We sell LifeVac and recognize its documented rescues. But what happened when Mally tried to use it shows why having a device doesn’t replace knowing what to do.

The FDA classifies LifeVac as a secondary treatment to use after standard choking rescue methods have failed.

For a conscious adult or child with severe choking, we teach the AHA’s sequence of 5 back blows followed by 5 abdominal thrusts (Heimlich). Repeat until the object comes out or the person becomes unresponsive. Have someone call 911. If the person becomes unresponsive, start CPR.

LifeVac can be a valuable tool. Learning how to respond should come first.

WHEN SOMEONE NEARBY IS CHOKING, YOU ARE THE FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE!

People are always surprised when I tell them that most Firefighter/Paramedics have never performed the Heimlich on an actual 911 call.
There’s a simple reason for that. By the time we arrive, one of two things has usually already happened:
1. The patient is completely unresponsive after 7–10+ minutes without oxygen, or
2. Someone on scene already did effective back blows / abdominal thrusts and the airway is clear.
That’s why you are the first line of defense.

Current AHA protocol (2025 guidelines)

Conscious adult or child (1 year and older)
• Put phone on speaker and Call 911 (or better yet, have someone else call while you save a life).
• Give 5 back blows (heel of the hand, firmly between the shoulder blades, person leaning forward).
• Give 5 abdominal thrusts (Heimlich – fist just above the navel, quick inward-and-upward thrusts).
• Alternate 5 and 5 until the object comes out or the person becomes unresponsive.

Infants under 1 year
• 5 back blows + 5 chest thrusts (no abdominal thrusts).

If the person becomes unresponsive
• Lower them to the ground, start high-quality CPR, and check the mouth for the object before each set of breaths. Do not do blind finger sweeps.

What about LifeVac and other anti-choking devices?

These are SECONDARY devices only. The FDA authorized LifeVac in March 2026 specifically as a “suction anti-choking device as a second-line treatment” to be used only after the standard BLS choking protocol (back blows + thrusts) has been tried and failed. The FDA, AHA, and American Red Cross are all CLEAR ON THIS: starting with a device instead of proven manual techniques can waste critical seconds.

Our professional tools look different when we show up with the Fire/EMS apparatus (laryngoscope, Magill forceps, advanced airway equipment, etc.), but the principle is the same: hands-on techniques come first.

Learn proper back blows and the Heimlich. Practice them. Teach your family. That knowledge is still the highest-yield intervention available in the first minutes of a choking emergency. Armor yourself with the knowledge that may someday safe your loved ones.

Those first few minutes belong to the people already there—and their actions can make a lifesaving difference.

If someone is unresponsive and isn’t breathing normally—or is only gasping—recognize a possible cardiac arrest. Call 911, follow the dispatcher’s instructions, begin CPR, and use an AED as soon as one is available.

🚨 HEART ATTACK ≠ SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST.
Knowing the difference could help you save a life.

October is Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month, and we’re clearing up a common—and potentially deadly—misunderstanding. These terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe different emergencies!

❤️ HEART ATTACK: A BLOOD FLOW PROBLEM (Plumbing Problem)
A blockage prevents blood from reaching part of the heart muscle. The heart usually keeps beating, and the person may still be awake and talking.

⚠️ Signs can include chest pressure, discomfort in the arms, back or jaw, shortness of breath, nausea or a cold sweat.

📞 Call 911 immediately—even if you’re unsure. Don’t drive yourself.

⚡ SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST: AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM
The heart’s electrical system malfunctions, and the heart suddenly stops pumping effectively. The person becomes unresponsive and isn’t breathing normally—or is only gasping.

🚨 A heart attack CAN trigger cardiac arrest, but cardiac arrest can happen without a heart attack. (cpr.heart.org)

📊 THE NUMBERS SHOULD GET EVERYONE’S ATTENTION:

▪️ Approximately 350,000 people experience cardiac arrest outside a hospital in the U.S. each year.

🙌 YOUR ACTIONS CAN CHANGE THE OUTCOME.

If a teen or adult suddenly collapses, is unresponsive and isn’t breathing normally:

📞 CALL 911. Put your phone on speaker and send someone for an AED.
🙌 PUSH hard and fast in the center of the chest—100–120 compressions per minute.
⚡ USE an AED as soon as it arrives. Turn it on and follow its instructions. It will assess the rhythm and advise a shock only if needed.
