Sandy has seen her fair share of changes since she was first hired at age 15 in 1976 at what is now known as MercyOne Oelwein Medical Center.

The Oelwein native started working in the cafeteria after her sister, Linda, mentioned there was a job opening, which led to a competition between the sisters over who could work at MercyOne longer.

Throughout her career, Sandy has worked in the cafeteria, physical therapy and now, the admissions/business office. With 50 years of experience — beating her sister's 45 years of dedication to MercyOne — Sandy has officially worked for MercyOne Oelwein Medical Center half of the time it's been open!

Kim Kockler's mother and maternal aunts had tested positive for an inherited BRCA gene mutation linked to a high risk of breast cancer. For that reason, Kim’s family practice provider took extra precautions with an ultrasound, biopsy and further testing, where Kim learned she had a cancerous tumor.

She went through 20 rounds of chemotherapy, shrinking her tumor. Then, after discussing future treatment with her providers, Kim decided to have both breasts removed and then immediately began the breast reconstruction process.

Thanks to her certified breast cancer navigator, oncologist, surgical team, and physical and occupational therapist, Kim felt well cared for and supported throughout her cancer journey.

“I thoroughly enjoy celebrating each year of being cancer-free. If you get a breast cancer diagnosis, trust the process, stay positive and hopeful. I listened to my medical team, who were all there every step of the way. I have nothing but good things to say about my care at MercyOne,” Kim shared.

Alli remembers going with her grandpa for a CAT scan as a teen in high school and how interesting it was to see the scan of his brain tumor. At this time in her life, radiology wasn’t exactly on her radar.

Now, as the radiology supervisor at MercyOne Oelwein Medical Center, going on 33 years, she reflected on the changes in the field and how far she has come in her profession. She feels blessed that her presence at work and in the area has made Oelwein feel like a second home to the Maynard resident. 💚

Much like Alli's progress in her career, MercyOne Oelwein Medical Center has also made great strides, including celebrating 100 years this September.
